Clutch partly in just to cut power to the transmission while breaking (don't floor it while moving: will burn out the clutch brake). If you don't clutch while dropping that far that fast, first you'll think you're in an earthquake (or 71 south thru Cincinnati) and then you'll stall out.x1Heavy and Keithdabarber Thank this.

You brake, (in 8th) till just before lugging, then if it wont push out of gear, a tap of the clutch will do it, continue to brake, when you get down to 20 or so, flip the spliter, and assuming you have the space to coast, goose the gas, slip into 4th, and let thw engine drag you down a little farther ext...
x1Heavy and KillingTime Thank this. -
No coasting on test day (if that's applicable).street beater Thanks this.

Its not really coasting if your gasing to grab gears... but in that case, maybe take 6th or 5th before going low range, to reduce the amount of time your "not in gear"KillingTime Thanks this.

Always have power to the drive unless you are stopped.
Playing in the low range gears sets up a problem for those who do not understand they can say... 4th gear at 18 or whatever 1500 back off the fuel, let her drift down to 1000, slip clutch in just enough to gently push out of 4th and pause a heart beat then slide in to 3rd release clutch gently while adding a bit of fuel Repeat the next gear down. Just before you stop you will put the clutch in and you get that body falling to the floor sound as everything comes off the drives power wise. Engine should settle into idle, wherever that is while your transmission box proceeds to use it's clutch brake to set up so you can get into first gear and you feel that little sideways rock and hear Clack click! It's ready to go on green.
It literally takes a short time to physically do this than to type all that post here. -
Because you should not try to go into second when stopping. The trick is to slow the truck down as much as possible without using the brakes hard. Downshifting uses the engine as a brake, and when you are in say fourth and the r's drop to almost idle, go to the brakes to complete the job if you have room. If you don't, then use the brakes as the primary stopping power with the engine as a helper.TROOPER to TRUCKER and x1Heavy Thank this.

Keep up trying to get into those slow gears all I can add is keep greyhounds number handy. There is a reason it is hard to drop into those low gears in an unsyncronized transmission! If per chance you are able to get into those gears you might rip something really bad out of the trucks drivetrain. No offence but you really need to spend sometime with someone that knows how to shift or try to get into a tractor with an (auto shifting) transmission.

Yea the low gears have the potential to tear the engine block out or scatter the parts all over, that is a fundenmental lesson taught to all students in school as routine in my day. I don't think they are taught that today. Much.
Jake downshifting is usually reserved by those who configure the truck's ECM to allow it to literally snort between gears to kick the engine down fast in rpm so you can walk off in low gears either slowing down or speeding up.
I offer the thought that companies have ruthlessly abused the buying authority limited to a handful as to make sure today's push button trucks offer nothing for the true expert behind the wheel to be able to make use of certain procedures in certain situations where it is suitable to do so.
Thus the result is a truck with a red button, a yellow button, two gauges and a set of 4 buttons for the transmission. That's it. It's literally unattractive and not worth investing a life time to drive it. It might try to kill you on certain mountains for example because there is no trolley, there is no jake there is nothing at hand.
Might as well stay home and let them put robots in. Then maybe they will see the loss of human skilled expert truckers as a genuine cost that cannot be paid.TROOPER to TRUCKER and Lepton1 Thank this. -
Why not just clutch and brake? There is no shame in it.
TROOPER to TRUCKER and x1Heavy Thank this.
