For years now I've been thinking about becoming a freight broker. My situation is a little unique so I like to see what any of you think about me succeeding. To start off I would be working out of my truck I'm an expediter with a cargo van. I used to own a company and handle everything out of my cargo van. I can fax anything, make follow-up phone calls, answer the phone, internet access with a laptop everything you can do in the office.

I make pretty good money right now but hate being away from my kids I'm coming home and not knowing if I have to leave the second I get home. I'm pretty much on call 24 hours if I want which I usually do. I've been driving cargo vans and box trucks all over the country since 1996 I'm tired of it. Guys I work for now treat me great I definitely wouldn't want to go after their accounts.

So that is sort of the situation. So I would have money too get me through as long as it would take. I'm experienced with the freight industryBOLS and all that great stuff. And I've done cold calls and sales as long as Ive been driving. Actually I was the number 1 sales rep as a driver in the country for a huge bottle water company. So I have sales and industry experience.

You know after writing this I kind of talked myself into going for it. Not sure what's holding me up. I plan on going to David dwinell load training brokery School. Start out as an agent under them they will let me take my business with me. I know there are so many scams with these schools but I would like to get the education and I can afford it.

I guess I haven't made the move because there's so many bad Brokers and truckers as well. Just think the industry is all screwed up but it's all I know. What do top Brokers make or what can brokers make after there first 5 years? I know everybody will say it depends on you so what do top Brokers make in 5 years? What are the biggest obstacles when you first start as a broker? Is it almost impossible for a new broker to get a business running in 2017? I don't know I guess I'm looking for some kind of reassurance that somebody can make it as a broker starting from scratch. Because like wholesale and Retail is completely a waste of time starting a business in you can't compete with the big boys. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The owner of TQL is worth over a billion.
The competition for customers is fierce, what can you do that the others can't?

Well I would deal with small to mid-sized companies for now. Not the massive companies that pretty much tell you what you're going to do what you're going to charge. These smaller companies are treated like crap by most Brokers and trucking companies because they ship very little. That would be the sales angle I can approach them with.

As a carrier and seeing you as someone new, I would be skeptical of when I will be paid. I let out a very short leash to new brokers because it is a good scam to disappear into the night with the money the shipper paid you. I am not saying you would do this, I am saying it does happen and this is why the short leash. Do you have the reserves to pay me c.o.d. at least at first? If yes, we can possibly build a healthy business relationship. If not, I will wait to be paid before I do more loads for you. In the mean time you will have a different carrier showing up for every load. I like being the regular guy. Makes things go much smoother.

You sort of have to sell yourself to both the shipper and the carrier...as the new guy anyway. Why should they use your services as a shipper? Why should I haul for you as a carrier? You may find yourself using a lot of new carriers because of this. Those of us that have been around for a while (should) have regular business setup and why change something that is already working?

Good school! Went there myself.... The teach you how not to screw the carrier or or make yourself liable. If I had to do over, home school version is enough. Just by the agency with academy option for the extra help.
