Well just figured I would hop on here. Tomorrow is my last day of CDL school. Was a great experience. I went from being in the Army for 8 years to driving truck. My entire family at one point has driven for JB Hunt to Marten to Werner. Guess it's my time. I start orientation next Wed. I am not here wanting to hear all the bad about companies. Trust me I seen truck drivers in Afghan getting shot at and blown up. Being in a hot truck with No APU or driving all night. Honesty I want to hear why you old guys do this. The good side of driving a truck driver. Some good ole stories. I will try my best to keep people updated as I go.
NEW CDL Grad going to Werner.

Most Werner trucks I see have Apu's... I trained with Werner over a decade ago, no complaints aside from the low pay. Last I heard they upped driver pay, so what exactly are you asking?
-
Honestly. Some people like the money others like the road. My question is pretty much What do you like about driving truck.

What terminal you go in to? my orientations Wednesday at Allentown pa.

Driver ( almost ) this is what I want you to do.
Go to Wal Mart tonight. Purchase a case of Stagg Dynamite Hot Chili.
Eat a can directly from the can unheated an hour before you go to orientation.
Sit directly in the middle of the class.
When you get on your truck, I want you to eat one can the same way, before lights out while your with your trainer.
Thank Almighty God your not going to Schneider or Swift as their trucks are full of bed bugs and other parasites.
Did you know winter is coming?
When the bu####it gets too deep I want you to crank this song.
austinmike, Marcadious and Boattlebot Thank this. -
Everyone has their own likes and dislikes... I enjoyed hometime being wherever I wanted to be, I vacationed in multiple states when I was with Werner. I enjoyed getting to see sights that 90% of Americans will never see, waking up to the beauty of landscape rather than a commute through DFW. If you're young and single you'll love the career, once kiddos come you'll want to go local, once their gone you'll crave the road again... It's a lifestyle not just a career, but it has is perks. I avoid truckstops aside from fuel and showers, try to stay in rest areas with a view of nature. Even carry easy light charcoal and some frozen meat to enjoy in rest areas that have grills(I run SE, so MS comes to mind).

Cool. just left swift for Werner so sense your going to hq for yours, eat 2 cans of chili before orientation. altho, I'd like to add, find the air vent. sit as close to that as posible.
Also real tip, pack as light as you can. -
Brother, I started out as a 64C in the Army in 1979. Today that is known as 88M.
I drive because I love life on the road. I like seeing sunrises and sunsets in different places daily. I have a gypsy soul and a bad case of Wanderlust.
Welcome to the brotherhood, learn all you can, but most importantly, take a moment each day, especially while you are in training and appreciate where you are and what you are seeing. You may end up deciding you want to do regional, or local work, and if that's the case you may never again see the things you are going to see over the next few weeks.
It's new, it's fresh, enjoy it.
Welcome to the road. I hope it all works out for you.Last edited: Nov 3, 2016
