What we did on a fresh o/h was to bring engine up to operating temperature and check fluid levels and pressures then head straight for the dyno and really "exercise" it to help the rings seat properly. We also noticed that ring seating issues occurred most often to guys running Rotella right out of the gate, nothing scientific to prove it of course but more often than not.

I second this, i've had the same issues with Rotella out of the gate.

I once had a bran new truck with a Cummins, it used a gal of oil every 700 miles! Cummins had me block off the radiator and put it in a HARD PULL and get the engine HOT! to seat the rings!
