I graduated from truck driving school and received my CDL back in March of 2013 . I didn't go right into driving do to some family problems but now I'm ready to run... In truck driving school we had to have the pre trip down and man did I......
I knew the pre trip six ways to Sunday........Forward...three years later it's (pre trip) not locked down in my mind as well as it was in school..
And yeah I've been studying again...
I'm heading out the end of this month for orientation and training/refresher. I know all companies are different on standards and all instructors as well but is the general sense that one will be examined on the pre trip the same way as when you tested out for your CDL in the sense that you must nail it 100% or the company won't move you forward. Thank you in advance.....

You'll come in as a trainee, they will work with you on how they want you to pretrip. You won't fully "test out" until after you've already been with a trainer for a while.

    Hoodoo Voodoo Thanks this.

Yeah.....I looked into a little over half of the companies that you listed for me I kept running into the same problem. I haven't been on paper for a job since 2012 and for most companies that lack of work history is keeping me down, but US Xpress said that they would take me no problem it's all set up for orientation on 11/28 so I'll go get experience and update my work history come next summer / fall I'll get what I really want flatbed!!!!!!! Hey thanks again for the list even though I didn't land with one of the companies on the list it really was helpful I made a few contacts locked in some phone numbers and like I was saying . A few months go by I'll give them a call and see

    Good luck

    But got to say this

    You got your cdl, right?

Then you are already trained and the company is providing a mentor so you can learn the company, they can't train you to drive.

I disagree completely with this. Having a CDL does NOT mean one is trained.

Does the CDL Manual and Test cover the proper way to descend a mountain? Does it cover how to chain a truck? Does it cover how to tell when you are on black ice?

One of the biggest problems with new drivers is the "I know what I am doing" attitude when they really don't.

A CDL means one is qualified to drive a truck, not that they are trained.

When I got my CDL From a school I quickly learned that I only had the license the drive a commercial truck. No company in their right mind would just hand me the keys to a fleet truck and say "now go to work". You have to expect to get training for weeks before you are of any value to a company. Real driving. This can be combined class and on-board driving in a trainer's truck. Usually paid. Then after some weeks you can get more paid experience on your own truck. A full year of real trucking experience opens doors to other better jobs. Your first year is not for getting rich. Think of it as free college, no grants and loans to pay back!
