I have been working on trucks for over two years. The hours that I have put in, I would say I've been doing it four plus years. All though papers and test tells nothing about the knowledge you have, I would like to be a certified inspector and certified in mechanical. Little extra funds to pay for it but really need/want the papers stating i know (and much more) that's required for the papers... How can I get this done?

Look up ASE. Pass the tests T2- 6? equals medium and heavy truck master tech.

If you are looking for something to back you up in an argument at the scales, won't help you.

You can get T2-T6 ASE certifications, I have them and I'll be the first to tell you that I only have them because they were paid for by a former employer. The customers and shops that care about them are few and far between. Reason being is anyone that has had a job with mechanic in the title for 2 years can read a book and pass the test to become certified. The best mechanics and techs I know are the guys that have seen it all and figured out ways to fix it right and the first time, and that just comes with time and learning. That being said, if you just want them go for it. But remember, you'll be certified the same as a kid that went to tech school for 1 1/2 years, got a job for 6 months and took some tests, and the industry knows that.

In Michigan u have to be state certified. There r six tests u have to pass taken at the sos . If u pass all six u are a state certified master heavy mechanic. Took about 4 hours to take all six.

That's pretty lax IMO. Makes me feel like a sucker for putting in 6k hours on the job plus 60ish weeks of technical training to become licensed......
Heavyd and TROOPER to TRUCKER Thank this. -
I had 20 years experience before taking test . Ase certified techs have to take same tests after schooling to work in mi

Wow I didn't realize there were states that had their own requirements for you to be able to work, we don't have anything like that in TX. I wonder how many others have their own requirements? And I'm curious if there are a lot of mechanics flying under the radar ignoring the requirement?

Yeah we do things a bit different in Canada. 4 year apprenticeship program. Start at 60% wage with 10% increase for each year completed until done. 1500 hours and 8 weeks of school and final exam needed to advance to the next year.

...and then the company wondered why I seldom ran their equipment I was responsible for through their shops...and looked everything over REAL good before rolling out with it if it DID go through their shop.
