If my truck is registered for 30000 lbs can I cross a bridge weight restricted to 20000 if my truck is empty and it doesn't weight 20000 lbs?

Yes the bridge weight restriction is for your actual weight not registered weight.

Just remember that since the day the bridge was built it has been falling down. The slower you go over the bridge the better.

There are bridges that have signs stating "registered" gross wt.....just watch out for those.

There is a exception to which I had to cross every day with a milk tractor trailer that had 30K in the tank by the time I reached that bridge. At the foot of it sat a sign, on that sign had fire equiptment weight ratings which were in excess of my axle and axle tandem groups so that bridge was good to go. (Boring Maryland, about a 6 ton limit)

It is one of the lighter bridges I dealt with. However.. there were bridges in my time you did not fool with, the US 15 stone bridge above manassas in the forest (easily identified by a wide concrete bridge in place now) and the Harpers Ferry crossing 340 at the time was not just weight restricted but local company drivers signed a form saying that the estate will be in charge of building a new one should you drop the old one.

That I haven't seen yet, but here in MD we do have signs appearing at weigh stations that feature the dreaded letter "R".
