Thank you! So walk in with permit/endorsements/DOT phys and 10 year driving record and they'll likely talk to me. Much obliged.

you won't need a 10 year driving record. trust me they will do there own research on you lol. Just walk in with your permit and endorsements you should be good. The terminal manager isn't the one who finalizes your hiring. it's the HR department.

Don't bother getting your own physical. Most companies will send you to get one on their dime. And you won't need one until you are a CDL holder anyway.

ABF is going to be a stable job. I think they have the original Master Freight Agreement on the Teamsters contract. Free medical benefits also, which is like a $1000 benefit alone.

I can't get a permit without one. First step now. Doesn't mean I'll spend for the deluxe version. :^)

Thanks to everyone, sorry to OP for detouring your thread.

Really? I've never heard of that. Maybe just in your state?

I think it's a NY thing. They're expecting you to start driving a CMV once you acquire a permit, hence the need for the medical right out of the gate.

OP: I used to reverse-commute myself, from Brooklyn to Hicksville. You're going to get hit with NYC resident tax if you take a job outside the boroughs. On the bright side, if you land an LTL job you should be able to get out of dirty Queens :-D

Bob, I've been looking at a few states as possibilities and so far they all require it. JPenn has probably nailed the rationale behind it.

Copy. Now that I think about it, I got my medical card before my permit due to what I thought was the requirements of the school itself. I just thought if you got your permit on your own you could wait for the medical. Oh well, not the first time I've been wrong!
