It's to me that runniing a two car trailer would be very difficult, long term. If he was also was able to put freight on that trailer, he opens up more opportunities for himself. This is coming form a guy who runs a underpowered Ford and runs under 26,000. I focus on light weight, exclusive use, time sensitive freight. I can not pull a lot of weight (2000 7.3 f350) so I am not going to try ( I could but seen a lot of people tear up their equipment ) He does have contacts who he has been working with so that is a big plus. I believe he could work with the equipment he has now and focus on expanding his customer base close to his location.

And there's the confusion. I think its been pointed out already, but the GVWR is just that, gross weight. That's not what your truck and trailer weigh. That figure is the maximum weight you can be at including cargo. How much cargo is the difference between actual (tare) weight and gross weight allowed. You can go back to a 26k tag and not worry about IFTA at all. You do need to run your rig across a scale though so you can see how much you can haul.

Here's an update I called the NC Highway Patrol Motor Carrier Unit, he told me I am nuts to put 40,000 on the trailer and he said if the trooper that told you that was here I would kick him in the butt. The NC permenant for hire plate restricts me to NC only NO Interstate I would need apportioned. He said go back to DMV register the weight as 26,000 the max u can put on the for hire plate and then go get the empty weight of your truck and trailer and call me back. I got weighed empty.
    Truck Empty 7,456
    Trailer Empty 4485
    Total Weight 11,941

He said ok now the GVWR for the Ram is 10,000 The trailer is 14,000 so you have a GVWR of 24,000 pounds and your actual weight is 11,941. You are not by any means apportioned or CDL. You can safely load 10,000 to 12,000 pounds on that trailer and have no issues at all. He also said in NC the scale house goes by the greater number to make the determination. Either your GVWR or your cargo wieght whichever is higher is what the scale house uses. So go get your money back and get to work
