Am I making my turns wrong??

So how far ahead of a green light are you starting your downshifting? 1.5 miles or so?.....

 

I'm not going to Nancy the truck to an exit ramp stop sign, man... I'm hitting it in 9th / maybe low rpm 10th, then knocking it down to the recommended (usually 7 or 8 - skipping). Then I'll jake it to the sign, maybe catch 6th, then roll it into 4th (no rev) and be along my merry way. Why take 4 minutes to do something 30 seconds long?

 

I wonder if we should be starting out in 1st as well?

(Give him a minute, he's green. The real road will knock the school out of him.)

 

I may get paid by the hour, but not well enough to take 3 and a half minutes to cross a intersection....

 

No, starting in gears higher than one is fine.

I would add gauge the lights, just like any kind of driving. ie; if the green or left turn arrow has been on for a certain period, gear down. I drive a ten speed. Maybe it's just me but I rarely make any turn higher then seventh.
