Boss's C12 is leaking from the front cover. Cat says this is a common problem and is caused by a crack in the front cover. They said it is a 6k repair.
Anyone else experienced this or has anyone came up with a fix other then replacing the cover?
This is all the info I have right now. I'm not sure where the crack is.

AFAIK cracked C12 front covers are not common, the most common cause of oil leaks from the C12 front structure is the bolts around the cam tunnel comming loose.
6k sounds a bit expensive, I can do one by myself in 2 days if the radiator is a reasonably simple one to R & I.MJ1657 Thanks this. -
Is it the front aluminum cover or is it leaking around the steel plate that goes against the block ?
The first one isn't to bad to fix but the second one is allot harder because you have to take off the whole front of the motor including the front motor mount !
I could see the steel one costing 6grand but the aluminum should be like 2grand and parts.MJ1657 Thanks this. -
We will do some more checking.
Thanks for the ideas guys. -
Mine had a bad leak and it ended up being just the outer cover. Easy fix.MJ1657 Thanks this.

C-12s dont have the steel plate against the block like C-15s, the cast aluminium housing bolts to the block, there is a tin plate on the front of the housing that covers the gears.MJ1657 Thanks this.

I'd find the crack and JB Weld it

Does anybody ever post their conclusion on here? I know this is old but its posted. I have a 2001 C12 in a Pete and Ive got a leak in the front and would just have liked to knoow what this guys problem actually was and how it was fixed. If anybody actually KNOWS of a common leak on a C12 in the front please post it. I guess I should just start a new thrwad.

Unfortunately Rick it happens alot on here. It makes me kind of angry cause I know it would help a lot more people with their problems if they posted an update on how things got fixed, plus cut down on new threads.
As for your problem sorry I can't help you. Did you clean engine really good and see where it is exactly coming from the front? -
We got rid of the truck without fixing the leak.rick3305rick Thanks this.
