That's the amount of smoke it is blowing for 5 minutes or so. I have a video of it in the day time, the smoke is blue/black.

It could be a warped injector seat. That can be repaired in the truck.

They got it apart and the head gasket was blown and there was some pitting, cat recommends machining the block. Mechanic said my block looks identical to the pic with the cat recommendation. They dropped the head off today to get it tested, which will be done tomorrow morning. Still no obvious reason for the gasket failure, mechanic said he could tell it was a low mile engine but he thinks when someone did the reman on it they didn't machine the block, but who knows. So pending the outcome of the head I have to make a decision.
I am going in the morning to look at it and make a decision on some different options.
1. Just replace the head gasket
2. Machine the block and slap it back together
3. Machine it plus in-frame
I don't really know what I will do just yet until I see the estimates, leaning towards option 3 but I'm thinking I won't be able to afford it at this time so I'm just hoping that I can afford 2. I look at the actual miles and the reman only has 105k on it... disappointing -
sounds like a slap job didnt check the liners heights

Well the head check results came back,4 outta 6 cylinders had cracks in them... Decided to put a new head on it, machine the block, do an inframe and replace the radiator. $16.5k fml
SAR, Oxbow, 2CAN and 1 other person Thank this. -
Thanks for updating this thread. You made the right choice. It may be painful now but it would be worse if you only did part now and had to do it again.
Please do yourself a favor and make sure that they check and document the liner protrusion. IIIRC it should be between .004 and .008, any less than .004 and you will have head gasket issues.flatbeb mac Thanks this. -
Thanks, I talked to them about that as well.
When I went in the estimate was at $15k then the mechanic informed me that the radiator was leaking in two places. I bought a new radiator last december from 4 state trucks but when it arrived it was the wrong one so I just opted to have the old one fixed. I figured it would last longer than a year lol but I noticed it started leaking about 2 months ago never leaked enough to add fluid. So when he mentioned it I figured well I am already in this deep go for it.
Sadly, Cat no longer carries that radiator so my only option is a core. I just hope that the cost stops where it is. I need no more surprises, the $3,150 for a new head was a shock as well as the inframe and the ...well it's all a shock -
Cat rad? What kind of truck is this? Im assuming when you say cylinders have cracks in them your talking about the head? A lot of guys get the block cut for counterbores nowadays.
-
Nice catch, had my mind on so many different things, meant kenworth! It's a 91 w900l. Yes, it's the head with the cracks, sorry for the confusion.
-
Probably better off rebuilding your rad with a quality core than a cheap off brand complete unit anyways
flatbeb mac Thanks this.
