I found a 79 superliner with the 300 and a 5 speed. Dont know a whole lot about them. I ran pete's mostly 389 and 379. I did run an old R model with a 300 in once upon a time but I didn't spend much time with it.

are the 5 speeds like a twin stick that has one with the 5 gears and then another stick is high low and reverse?
if that is so could I gear it up so I could run 70mph and would I have some decent power? I know Mack's are different then other companies cause the HP rating is at the wheels and not at flywheel.

Its a day cab with a camel back sups. I would in time put a coffin sleeper on it and put an air ride of some sort on it. Truck is really cheap. I haven't gone to look at it personally yet but from pics looks really clean.

    thanks for the help.

A Mack 5 speed is just that 5 speeds no splitter just keep shift to the right

I'm not trying to say this wrong but if you have driven peterbilt hoods you will be disappointed with a 300 mack superliner on camelback suspension to beat down the road and beat you apart

The transmission is a 5 speed unless there are two sticks. In 5th gear they ran from 40 mph to 70 mph. One of the selling points was less shifting when new. I remember looking at new ones at a dealer in Bakersfield California. 300 Maxidyne and 5 speed. The Mack transmissions have 3 counter shafts. That makes them run longer before an overhaul is needed. I can explain why but you probably know already.

Well it's myfirst truck I would own. Trying to do it with the cheapest way to keep start up cost down. I would air ride the suspension and cab. Ran a c12 that was 435 was tired. Had a c15 550 for a short while the 389 had a mx13 at 455. Wasn't impressed with it. I figure I would slowly build it in to a smother riding modern day truck I guess.

That kinda of Mack trans has the high low and reverse on one stick and the gears on the other stick? Was in a r model was a low boy truck that the county owned.

I read that some one was getting 10mpg running slower. If your going 70 are you running it way out there on the rpm. Don't know a whole lot about these trucks

As someone who is going through the process of updating an old truck I will say that it will not be cheap. I tore into mine and just kept finding more #### wrong. Better off spending a little more up front for something work ready.
