Hello fellas, I am a new truck driver, I have applied to a new company after my long interest in becoming a truck driver. I just graduated my cdl school that the company payed for if i stood with them for a year and i am very happy to have just received my new cdl licence in the mail a few days ago.
I will be working for PAM Transport and will be taking a bus ride up to Arkansaw right after thanksgiving. I am excited but a little worried. I have heard many horror stories about these big trucking companys and what to expect from some. I have done some research and read reviews and felt because i am joining this industry it would be good for me to join a forum and see what other drivers think and hear some of there stories.

My main concern is my pay, and i want to know if it will get better or how i can plan out my options to better suite me.

When i read the information given to me about this company i read my first year earning potential is 50k. Then i see the split, and im not that great in math but decent enough to make the assumption that it wont be anything like that.
What makes little sense to me is that Team hazmat witch is 42cpm split = 21cpm, But solo driver is 25cpm. Team drivers are supposed to make more then regular team drivers and solo drivers are supposed to make the least. Unless there is a typo on the companys end.

The company says they will make sure my paychecks are at least 500 a week for the first 60 days untill i get my gears turning and understand the road and job better.

But im guessing this is before taxes.

How can a company justify paying its employees so little?
I was making more money at my last job and i was coming home every night.

What i am curious about is if the pay will get better?
If this is normal for beginner drivers in companys.

Some people are recommending other companys to start at and that other companys would take over the money for the cdl school that was payed for me if i join them.

Some of what others say sounds too good to be true, and i know in the trucking industry theres a lot of taking advantage of drivers.

I just want to make the best choice for me, and if i can potentially make more in the future then i dont mind staying with pam. But if im just getting used and never see the light of a better future then i might aswell try another company.

Does anyone have any insight about pam transportation and about other jobs in the indrusty starting out making good money?

What choices can i make to make the best of this career?

Well at this point PAM payed for your school? If so your under contract. If so its Low pay for you for a year until contract is complete. Unless you can afford to pay them back.

Yes i am under contract to them but other companys can and will take over that contract.
I just want to know more about my options and what i can expect out of the industry.
If i can make a better choice now i will, otherwise i will stay with pam.

As a team driver, you will get paid that .21 for all of the miles that the truck runs. So, for example, you will make .21 x 5000 miles versus making .25 x 2500 as a solo driver. You're getting less per mile, but you get paid for the miles that your teammate drives as well.

As yes, .42 split for a team is low but you've gotta start somewhere.

.25 is low in my opinion. However most Contract company's only pay this. The carriers I hire through pay at a min .30 average .36 As far as Team driving .42 is standard to start...

Starting pay for solo drivers is in the 30-40 cents per mile (cpm). Are you choosing to team? It can be hard for many drivers to sleep in a bumping/moving truck. Teaming is a good way to quickly learn the job. Almost all new drivers team with a trainer at their first company. After that most drivers go solo. A truck is a small space for 2 people to share. I wouldn't commit to permanently driving team until after you drive team with your trainer/mentor.

Got my license w/ driver solutions and PAM. When you work it out its like .175 cpm solo. I opted to go somewhere else that paid more (.37) and did tuition reimbursement.

You are not obligated to work for them only to pay them back.

They also require 6 months of teaming AFTER training.

You will not make 50k in your first year and you surely won't do it at almost a slaves wage cpm. Good luck! I hope you do more research and find a better company to start with!
