You just need to get with the right outfit. We have plenty of freight coming out of Florida and it's not cheap. Just have to put your boots on the ground and go out and make a name for yourself.DrDieselUSA Thanks this.

We bought a 40' brand new Chassis 2 years ago and got all set up with the rails and never did one load. You can't compete with the Miami crowd unless you're driving old equipment and god only knows what other corners they cut. We are out of Broward. We sold the chassis yesterday. The guy that picked it up for the purchaser does boats mostly, nice guy and seemed to be doing ok but he doesn't go to the ports.

I started local then went OTR. One of the best experiences of my life. To be sure I wasn't going to get rich but I enjoyed seeing something new everyday and new places. Further on my 34 restart I used to rent a car and go sightseeing. Of course it had it's bad parts, wait times, lumpers etc but I came to realize that not only with lumpers or warehouse workers but in life, I only had to deal with them with a short time while they had to live with themselves so why should I let some jerk ruin my day?
I'm in the office now and I'll catch some flack for saying this but I enjoyed driving a truck much more than being in an office. What do I learn every day? To each their own I guess in the end. -
I live in Chicago but might relocate there....that's why I'm asking....

Ok. I highly doubt you will make $10,000 month unless you are a long distance heavy hauler or some type of specialized driver. If youre just an everyday driver in the container world, you be around $50,000 to $70,000 if you monitor yr fuel and move a lot of loads. I dont worry about fuel expense (but I do drive with mpg in mind) and I dont always work 5 days a week or weekends (containers from rail yards). $50,000 pays all my bills, savings and fun money. If you need more than that, I believe you may be in the wrong business.
On a side note: if you have any questionable history, you may not be eligible for a TWIC card. Which is mandatory to get on the ports.DrDieselUSA Thanks this. -
I am in the market you area inquiring about, I clear roughly on average $2100/week after fuel. I run out of Jacksonville port but I start in Fort lauderdale. I go jacksonville to Atlanta 3 times a week Jacksonville to miami/fort lauderdale once per week. I'm home on Fridays then leave the house on mondays. This works for me, I don't run out of Miami or port everglades I don't speak Spanish, a lot of the Spanish don't like to give any info they quick to tell you they don't speak english. I try running miami/ port everglades and I was only clearing $600/ week after fuel
DrDieselUSA and djblast019 Thank this. -
Well, do you mean in Florida???
Cause as a container hauler in Chicago my settlements seldom dip below $2,200 after fuel....average is $2,600 to 2,800 working 5 days a week and home every night....and that's this year, it's been REALLY slow all year.....
So I guess container work is horrible in Florida......a bit surprising.... -
Well, I do speak Spanish, but $600 a week after fuel is .....well, not livable....,,$2,100 a week and out all week!!!!!.....looks like I might have to find something else to haul!!!!!!7seriestv Thanks this.
