I have an opportunity to pickup a 2013 international prostar plus 6X2 sleeper with ~400k on it for ~$15k still under warranty in great shape that checks out. I've read about the various issues with these trucks and the maxxforce but have had a difficult time separating the facts from the drama. Obviously the market has completely cratered on them on the commercial side.

Question. Im looking at 10-15k trucks for private use (sitting mostly, maybe driving a couple of times a month on regional 500mi hauls pulling a 25k lb trailer). Would one of these be better/more reliable/have less issues than an older (04 to 07) Volvo 780, freightliner, etc. with a d12 or cummings isx - but nearing 1M miles with maybe some freshened bearings or what not? Is the maxxforce a 1M motor?

Which truck would you choose and assume lower operating/maintenance cost? Newer lemon or older gettin' tired truck? I don't want big repair bills. Can these prostars handle even casual use without having a butt ton of dealer intervention or is that still asking too much?

I know the right answer for the yugo, reliant.. not sure on these trucks. Maybe I should be looking for a deeper discount?? Not sure what they ran new.

Appreciate the insights and reccomendations for a truck. Thanks.

Many people are temped by those lower prices. The age and mileage is right where everything goes bad. Check the warranty history. If you have the last 8 of the VIN, I can check for you. But this is right where the DOC is finished. Also, if this has not had an EGR cooler and EGR valve, it will need one soon. If the aftertreatment has not been maintained that will be one headache after the other. The core engine is actually great, it is all the stuff around it just doesn't hold up. There are several different levels of warranty too, so it may not have the warranty you think it does. I can also check that for you with the VIN. But in all honesty, if you need a truck that have to count on every time, these aren't for you. If you need a cheap truck for occasional use and don't mind down time due to problems, then these could be exactly what you are looking for.

I really appreciate your response. It's a tempting apple to take a bite from. Can anything be modified to make them better aside from an engine swap? I will get you the VIN and check the warranty level/history per your suggestion. I was reading the recall history on these trucks, and frankly the list is pretty terrifying- faulty metallurgy in the brake brackets, trailer may suddenly release, etc. It sounds like the trucks should just be taken off the road completely. Is International secretly owned by Samsung? Maybe they could rebrand as the Prostar Galaxy? :)

A cheap truck for occasional use is exactly what I'm looking for- say 30K miles per year. But how cheap can a heavy duty truck be if it has to be towed to a dealer all the time? I'm looking more for something I can just put synth oil in, do basic maintenance, it always starts, and it just works like a Honda. The shiny paint, big cup holders, and HID's are nice- but starting and not paying thousands to dealers really was really the killer feature I was looking for, even if it means an older higher mileage but proven truck.

If it was your 10-15K that you had to stretch as far as possible, what sleeper would you buy?

Ok, all warranty policies are expired, so maybe they are offering some kind of 3rd party warranty?

The good news is, last year and 2014 pretty much all major issues have been dealt with. Last year new DOC and egr cooler, boost control solenoid and exhaust manifold reseal. 2014 it had a turbo done too.

The other problem you will encounter with this truck is that you will be stuck taking it to a dealer for troubleshooting. Not much you can do with out a computer and proper software to connect to the truck with.

I would try to find a nice Pre-egr or EGR only 9900 with an ISX.

I am looking a truck to buy. It is a 2013 International Prostar. I have a Carfax and talked to someone to see if it has any recalls on it. I just don't know about the warrenty history of this truck. The last 8 of the vin is DN313891. could you check that out for me. Thank you in advance.

Shows unit may need ECM calibration update. Warranty history stops in 2015. Nothing out of the ordinary, usual stuff. EGR valve, rear exhaust manifold section and both egr cooler cores replaced in 2015. No other recalls.
