Ok, so the general consensus is those policies are shady and if the driver is desperate enough for a job, well then its on them for agreeing to the terms. Thank you guys for your opinions. I knew I made the right choice in walking away. Im not that desperate. I have an excellent driving record, so finding my next company shouldn't be a problem :)

Im half tempted to dig in and laugh at the out of route miles. Bill me.

The rest of it would have caused me to go home as well declining the job, Im dumb but not stupid.

Why should we play 20 questions? If you aren't going to name them why bother with the thread?

I'm the exact opposite. I don't mind out of route charges. Maybe a bit less like 0.80-1.00 / mile, but in concept fine. The company is paying for the fuel for your joyride after all.
The company I work for now charges 1.00 / mile for out of route. Of course their definition of out of route is simply "The load was late because you went out of route." They don't really care how I get there as long as I do, on time.

    i think
    1) is fair.

    2) i don't like it, and i don't know if they have any legal basis to enforce this? This is a cost of doing business.

    3) Not sure if i agree with this one---the part about being fined an additional $300 and i don't know if the company has a legal leg to enforce/collect this?

    4) This isn't fair because can you charge them if they decide to can you without 2 weeks notice? Sometimes you have to quit quick----whatt if they had you sitting around doing nothing and you decide you have to leave NOW? It's their fault they didn't have any loads for you. Also, i don't know if they have any legal basis to collect this?

Doesn't sound like a winner company.....

Quality drivers are in a position to negotiate. I've been in negotiations with drivers that I really wanted working for me (When I owned several trucks). I had rules, I also had financial penalties for breaking said rules. If a driver came in and handed me a stellar resume and said "I'm not comfortable with this or that penalty for making a mistake.." I have simply drawn a line through the part he didn't like. I have also said "I usually pay this amount but Im willing to pay you more because you asked for more". If you come in to my office with a resume showing 4 different jobs in the last two years and none of your previous employers would re-hire you... Don't even try to negotiate. Is the O.P. someone who has no room to negotiate?

I don't get this thing about calling previous employers. If I left there was obviously something I was not happy about and I wouldn't expect my previous employer to say anything good about me since here in Chicago they take it as a personal offence when you tell them you don't want to work for them anymore.

I wonder why they would take it as a offence, would mind explaining that.
