Yes, I am talking about RGN not steps or flats.

I neglected to acknowledge where he said 55 ton when talking about axle spreads.

    LaComa Thanks this.

I guess it would depend on your target freight, I should have left this one alone. There are guys on here much more capable of answering this, I'm in a niche so I'm a little out of touch with third party freight.

    Oxbow and LaComa Thank this.

Not really talking about freight in general. Mainly just seeing how many guys use a six axle setup. How do they have theirs set up. What would you do different if you could change it.

60 inch axle spacing gives you more permit able weight out west and several other states. 60,000 on the tridem letting you gross around 120,000 with 3 and 3. I like 6 axle

I've tried both I think 60 inch rides better too. A little harder to get around in tight spots but it's worth it I think.

You better off joking with 54 or 55" spacing and moving the extra length into a longer well. As a 6 axle you will be running light freight as well as small heavy freight.

Even out west you can only get maybe 20k 46k 48-59k max on a tare weight around 40-44k. If you go with a 55 ton trailer, you can't load it heavy or take advantage of the neck length. So what you get is a heavier trailer, often with a higher deck height and possibly a short well length like 26 or 27'.

If it were me - and I have run all the possible combinations - I would run a 3axle truck and a 40 ton 2 axle with a flip.

Having said that, every tom dick and Harry is running that set up right now and for cheap.

Rontonio. Thoughts on going to 40 ton mechanical from 55 ton hydraulic aspen to get more well space. Mechanical has flip which I've never ran. Going from 55ton aspen with 24 in well

Just depends on what you move. I ran mechanical 2 axle 55 ton with 29' well with an intermediate flip and a final flip plus spreader bar so I could run as 2 3 3+1 or a 4.

If I were going away from my big trailer - I would run a 45 ton stretch as a 7 and 8 axle or based on living in Phoenix I would look a 16 tire stretch set of for a 3rd flip axle (think 17.5 tires with wide low bolster between axle 1 and 2 ).

I would have the double KP setting so I could get CA legal with the longer well. If I could build it as a Hydr with a flip.

But if you running up your in the NW, then no 16 tire. Can't remember if OR has changed their minds about them.

I never minded the mechanical neck but the Hydr neck sure makes it easier some times.

    Oxbow Thanks this.
