My first full year at UPS, 2003 I made $28,809. I was laid off 7 months that year, but never worked less than 50 hours a week every year after that.

Sounds like he wants to work the dock.

Knowing whether he means freight or parcel would help.

If you are talking about UPS parcel, it depends on the city and amount of drivers they hire. Some cities hire "off the street". Meaning you hire in as an experienced tractor trailer driver. Other locations hire drivers 100% from within. The only way to know is to ask someone familiar with what city you are wanting to get hired in.

Some locations will hire 1 full time person off the street for every 6 or 7 they promote from the inside, per the contractual obligation.

Getting on part time for the "peak" season is relatively easy in my area, providing you have experience and a pulse.

$55,946.84 gross for the year so far. i am likely to break 60K.

Now, as far as getting on without having to dockwork or loading trucks, if you mean for parcel/small pack, then i have no idea and thus can't comment.

If you're talking freight, then it's pretty flexible; You could start out on the dock at first, or if you want to go directly to driving you could do that. Or if you want to do a combo of both, you could do that also AND this may actually be the highest paying option out of all three---it depends on the terminal and demand at that particular terminal. We had guys who just got on grossing over 65K their first year as a dock/cdl combo.
