I started when I was 22, and now I am 24. And will be leaving otr trucking behind me. Its just not worth it anymore. I suggest find a local distibutor somthing like UPS, coke, 7up, or even conway. Theyll train you for free after you work there for a year. But these otr companies will suck life out of you.

Wow great post. Saved me some research. Roehl sounds convenient being that they have a school in my state. i plan on traveling the country as well so that might work out. Just have to do more research on the company. Thanks for the awesome post again

Sysco also hires at 21, hard work but great pay. OP could sign on right now as a helper and make decent money while they train him for a free cdl.

I went and got a four year degree. In the end it was so worth it. I graduated and went into a job where I was a mechanic and part time driver. I was lucky enough to enjoy the driving. I started taking all of the driving jobs that came my way. In the end I drive 2/3rds the time and wrenched 1/3rd the time. I got fed up with wrenching and the driving jobs were drying up on me. So I switched jobs 4 years ago with in the company. I now schedule the driving and the work that needs to be done on the trucks and trailers. I know, 180 flip but hear me out. I still get to drive when I want too as I make the schedules. My boss gives me so much freedom to do my job that when I say that I have to take a trailer 100 miles down the road to get work done he doesn't ask any questions. What I am getting at is that even though it is what you want now it may not be what you want 5 years from now or even 10 years from now.

If you are dead set on driving I know that Fed Ex (I know the reputation that they have) and Old Dominion are hiring in my area. No experience needed they say. Learn as much as you can from the older drivers. Never stop learning. You may hear one thing one day and two years down the road it may save your butt.

I started driving when I was 21 I got lucky and was hired buy a father and son that had 4 trucks. If you do decide to go with a mega company just do a lot of research and find one that suits your needs the best for the beginning.

You have a truckstop near you? Go there and talk to the drivers. Maybe you have a driver in your neighborhood. Talk to him. Maybe you can get a ride with him for a week and see first hand what it is.
If that doesn't work out, get in touch with the company of your choice. Tell them, you would like to see what it is before you sign on. Most likely you go out with a trainer but you'll stay in the passenger seat.
