Fed ex has bought out 2 carriers over the last 10 years or so. I can't remember the names of the carriers this morning. I re-read the first few posts and scanned the others briefly. Nowhere in this thread did I see a mention by the OP how many accidents he has had leading up to this one. Only the OP knows the full truth too. I have millions of miles in almost every driving situation there is. I can tell when I see (with my own eyes) a safe driver and an unsafe one. I have always found it funny that a driver can go his or her entire driving career with no serious at fault accidents but some drivers seem to not be able too. When you learn through experience what the common denominator's are that separate the two you are on your way to becoming a safe driver. Just the other day a friend was driving me to the VA Hospital and we were almost to the HRBT and the exit for the VA. The traffic was slowed as it mostly is during the day. I saw a Schneider with a SUV tailgating him. Then behind that SUV was a USA Truck. The USA Truck was about 3 feet off the rear of the SUV and all 3 were doing about 45 MPH. My thought was both the SUV and the USA Truck driver were playing with fire. Under the right conditions that USA Truck driver could have killed the person driving that SUV. Tailgating has become the bane of Trucking. You can call a carrier a scumbag all you want and maybe a carrier is but the person killed by a tailgating driver is just as dead even if this is true. A driver such as the OP reports hitting someone in the rear the driver in my view was tailgating or playing with his or her new I-phone. There are too many old hands in these forums that know the difference.
To me safety is a mindset and something did every day every trip. It is not something you do when a cop is behind you or your getting a check ride by your company. Are the people driving 4 wheelers fools? The jury has been back on that one for decades now. Truck drivers fuss and cuss about how stupid they are then to prove their point put their ignorance on display. Ask yourself this question what do you do? You are driving 75,000 pounds gross weight in a dry van. You are doing 60 MPH in medium to heavy traffic on a 3 lane highway in the middle lane. Suddenly a 4 wheeler pops into your path. What do you do? Do you accept the 4 wheeler as a hazard and back off or safely change lanes OR do you get up on that sucker and make them pay for having the
audacity to get into your path? Before you blow this off or make a funny joke remember that a large amount of drivers will do the latter. I have seen it time and time again. -
I refer to four wheelers as pilot fish. They are going to swarm all around you without a care in the world. You are not in a competition with them: They really have very little awareness of your existence except as an obstacle to getting where they are going.
You, professional driver, are the only one actually paying attention, use that to your advantage. Your one job is to get your load to its destination safely and on time. Stop wasting energy and emotion trying to police Mr. Magoo and the rest of the drivers around you and get back to work. -
this explains why you were fired....your speed approaching an active accident scene with emergency vehicles present was twice what it should have been.

You cannot get whip lash at the accident. Normally you will feel it the next day. If she got out of her vehicle claiming whip lash then she was lying.

I'm not sure about this case but a few years ago I suffered a bad whiplash injury during a bad landing in a Cessna 182 at my then home in Georgia. It is true the worst part of the pain comes in the next 24 hours however I knew at the time something was wrong. I was out of work for almost a week. However I'm with the previous poster. I always get cynical about "injuries" where trucks are concerned.

And, if you want to keep driving, you will take a position with one of them. If you really want to be a truck driver you will take that job and you will do it to the best of your ability. Then, you will apply for better jobs while continuing to work your butt off proving you are worth hiring for those better jobs.
The company may suck, so what? They may try (maybe succeed) to rip you off, so what? They are not your owner, they are not your goal: Use them to get yourself ahead and leave them in your dust. Do not get emotionally involved with the step ladder that you use to climb out of purgatory. Getting clingy with a ladder is weird, just saying.
If you don't treat every job as a way to prove your worth to your next employer you are a fool. My head explodes every time I see some dirtbag, half-assing the work he agreed to do, saying he's just doing this job until he gets his chance to shine. Shine now. Collect the rewards later.
