I'd like to know how a typical day goes. My wife and I are both joggers, and also lift weights. We go to the gym every day, but we are thinking of spending one year OTR, and being able to exercize is a big factor in the decision-making process. I've seen a few threads, but didn't see an account from anyone who exercizes regularly?

How do you squeeze a 30 minute jog into your schedule? Do you have to sacrifice a meal or sleep in favor of exercise?

I was a miler in College. Now, the idea of running wears me out. Exercise for me is watching TV. Pushing those buttons can really be a lot of work.
Nothing about this job should cause you to sacrifice. If you plan your day correctly. We have logs that protect us from being overworked. All you have to do is pull in an park for the night. Then do a run, followed by a shower at the truck stop of you choice.

When I was OTR, I tried to do things like park in the back row so I could walk further to truck stop. If I was on a reset in a good area I'd go for a hike or even rent a car for a day so I could go different places.

I love paddling so I'd go rent a kayak for a few hours if I was somewhere where I could easily get to that stuff. Just tried to be more active and get in exercise when I could.

I'm a local driver now, so I go to the gym at least 4 times a week and do active stuff on my days off (even stuff like chopping wood!).

Sorry I probably didn't help you but that's what I did regardless.

The idea of YOUR idea of running wears me out.

I think I've got a case of drivers arch going on too... My right foot: generally uncomfortable. Maybe its bad posture on the pedal, ergodynamics... Dunno. But I'm not running in Timberlands... Or at all, unless I'm being chased by a pack of wolves... And even then fight would be a first consideration (plus I'd get a lot of exercise in that bout).

Ask @Stachegravy - he seems like a hell-bent to be fit fellow.

I drive regional flatdeck. I'd like to think I get enough exercise from my job.

I second this. There's a whole lot more to trucking than just driving a truck IF you choose a segment of trucking that "offers" exercise. I flatbed, started early last year after a few years being a dock banging door swinger. I turn 61 next month. I'm in the best shape I've been in in decades.

The funny thing is though, since they've had me doing more of the regional pneumatic bulk work, I've been gaining weight, since all the "exercise" I get with that is "pull out a hose, hook up the lines, and bang on the tank with a hammer every once in a while".

But work is work, and I'll take a full day to 4-6 hours.

Yeah, recently my company started contracting with oil companies to hire us as drivers. Most of the work is on pneumatics, pumping concrete mix. I hate it. I don't break a sweat and it's SUCH a disappointment to check my mirrors for any load securement issues and be reminded I am pulling a pneumatic.

I chose freight that I have to unload at stops during the week for some exercise. Weekends I go to the gym and I walk around the lots of truck stops for cardio.

Food wise, it's kind of hard to eat "healthy" foods on the road during the week but Pilot & Flying J have health options. Loves has some but it is usually fruit and a little veg. I usually pack my own meals for the week.

Edit: I never have to sacrifice my break nor my sleep for getting some exercise.

    I know the feeling, lol.

I like the work, it brings some variety into my day/week, especially when the company isn't putting me on anything interesting (I'm still the go-to guy for "weird" stuff though). And I get to have a second truck (for the PTO/blower).
