Long ago, in training to haul gasoline (Something I swore I would never do... for familial reasons... uncle hauled the stuff in war and also on BIg Savage in Maryland, it almost killed him) we were taught specifically never to have a 5 gallon bucket anywhere on that rig, it is a indication of theft via a few dollops at a time. One could grow rich not having to spend a thousand dollars buying retail gas a month doing that. I got the 5 gallon bucket part. But I still do not understand why we have em. lol.

Stealing fuel is one thing we never did thankfully. That still did not stop people from asking at the fuel line.

Im beginning to consider that the fuel line should be fenced, walled off and security provided so that only truckers get access, not the general public that introduce so many problems and unwanted hassles around them.

I drove for a company years ago that let me park at the farm quite often. I was concerned that they might think I was stealing fuel for my machinery, but as I was always top on fuel mileage, I guess it never concerned them.

I had exactly the same attitude.

The one thing I did different though is put random crap I had access too in my fuel tanks. I sometimes delivered things like solvents and inevitably had other drivers with rejected stuff. One day I had a driver with a pallet full of 1 gallon cans of turpentine. We both filled up our fuel tanks from halfway to full with it and we both stashed about 40 gallons of it in our sleeper. I got a nice fuel bonus out of that as well as a phone call asking if I had accidentally used my own credit card on a fuel stop.

For petes sake, take pride in your fuel economy, its a sign of good driving.

I had a driver ask me if I wanted to buy some fuel last year. He said he would sell me 100 gallons for $100. I told him no then called his company and reported him. The terminal managed called me a few days later and thanked me. He said they found an electic pump in the guys truck. They didn't know how long the guy was selling fuel but they were pressing theft charges on him.

30 years ago it was hard to catch fuel theft. Had a driver that always fueled up when he came in. Took awhile but figured out he had oil heat at home. Drivers side tank drain plug came out real easy. Drained most of the fuel out of that tank at the shop, shut it off and filled back up with water. Went and delivered his load and then called to say he couldn't go out because the furnace quit.

What? 55gallon drum of fuel in his sleeper , that is insane. That guy is a mental case.

My old boss at a Pepsi plant used the company fuel cards meant for the trucks to fill him and his family's pov's. Couple times a week he'd randomly grab a card from one of the trucks.

Of course he was fired. And this was the plant manager making 80-100k.

This occured only once to me. The potential seller seemed a desperado. I was a company driver at the time so not a good targer. Now, even if someone offered I would not take it even for free. Somehow that discounted fuel smells bad to me. Besides fuel is still too cheap to have a decent profit off of it for diesel thieves.
