Driving to Alaska

There is a storm system right now coming on shore from Seattle down towards southern Oregon, it is fixing to or is dropping 3 to 5 feet of snow in the mountain passes just east of the coast all the way down. That would probably be enough to shut down I-90 at the pass up there even if it is protected by snow shed.

In a couple days Dakotas see a blizzard warning, the worst kind.

 

Don't forget, you will have to buy an Alaskan truck and trailer plate when you enter AK as they do not participate in the IRP program. They do have a permit available but it is cheaper to just buy the AK registration and you have a souvenir or a badge of honor for your truck while back in the lower 48.

 

There is no American cell phone reception there btw. Not even Verizon. You need a Canadian Burner phone. Fuel up BEFORE hitting the Canadian border as their fuel is STUPID EXPENSIVE. Nothing comes out of Alaska but Household goods (military moving), Wrecked cars, and Fish. You are NOT getting a load back if it is not those...

$12k is not an unreasonable rate. More for winter. Stay Warm.

 

I really hope you find it. Generally what gets to alaska does not get back out.

And the other man is right on loads out of there, we once contracted a semi truck to move freight from Fairbanks to Arkansas at a rate of 5500, which was really half what it should cost... We did not move that freight because it was a house that was sold and emptied out. It would have been cheaper to buy furnature brand new here at home.

 

This guy knows what is going on. Sweetgrass to Edmonton. Edmonton (Yellowhead Trail) to Highway 43 to the start of the Alcan at Dawson Creek. Follow that road all the way to AK. You will need tire chains, lots of them. Not the singles either. You want the triple rail or chains for dual tires. Learn how to put them on. If you go take your time on the roads. DO NOT push it on those roads in the winter time. If you wreck there is a very good chance that you will not have cell phone reception.

He didn't seem to do anything wrong. Just driving along and the back end of his truck kicked out on him about 1/2 mile in front of me. Guess what, no cell phone reception. Thankfully they all had their seat belts on and were not seriously hurt. I dropped them off at the next inhabited place along the way. They grabbed what they deemed important and hoped in the truck and the first thing I heard was seat belts clicking.

The roads are not treated like they are in the lower 48. Sometimes they won't even break out the plow to clear the snow. I drove 4 hours one morning in a foot of snow before I saw another vehicle on the road.

Take plenty of warm clothes and extra food as it is stupid expensive in parts of Canada. If you have a camera take plenty of batteries for it because you will end up taking a lot of pictures. The Whitehorse Weigh Station will warn you about the road from Haines Junction to Beaver Creek. It has the potential to be very rough. You will have to buy permits for the Yukon at Watson Lake. The weigh station in Tok AK will most likely be open, be up to date on your log books and paperwork as every time I have been through there I have gotten a full paperwork inspection.
