I don't care it's not my truck.

I drove the Alcan down when I moved back south. The gravel portions that some of you look down your nose at is better than 80% of the paved roads in the states.
We saw deer, elk, bison, moose and rein deer on the way down. Crossed into Canada at 11pm and the northern lights were in full splendor.
The Canadians knew how to grade a road. They dropped the ripper and took the road up all the way to the bottom of the potholes then came back and smoothed it out. Here the idiots just push dirt into the holes and expect it to stay. -
Fairchild Freight runs produce to Alaska.redoctober83 Thanks this.

Round my way they fill potholes when it's below freezing with "cold patch" n then the next time a plow comes thru, the plow peels the whole thing right out of the hole.

If you have a moose in the road. DON'T blow your horn. The moose might recognize that as a challenge. I've seen some funny video of a moose tearing vehicles apart. Well terrifying for the occupants.
Good luck.Lepton1, Brandonpdx and x1Heavy Thank this. -
That's right. YOU DO NOT BLOW your *&^^ horn. They will charge you and you wont like it. I learned that in Vermont. In Alaska.. they are this big and frankly you slow down and wait for them to get the hell off the pavement which is easier for them to travel on instead of deep snow.
Here you have Propane to a mine, 16% if not steeper in spots and -30
K6Chris, Dave_in_AZ, Lepton1 and 4 others Thank this. -
This is the way to travel. IF you get stuck in the wilderness, plenty of propane to burn and keep warm. haha
-
Not propane, actually wood, open fire with a bit of ether to light a pool of desiel on it. Problem is your propane tanker cannot have open fires or get stuck, mine relies on that fuel. (Notice the oxygen tanker leaving empty the other way among other things.)
A long time ago in Baltimore north known as Timonium when I was 8, the Baltimore County Fire Department assembled a army at a race track including several cannon trucks and lit a 800 gallon propane tank on fire with flares in midfield inside the race track. We were half way back up near the top of the grand stands which have no protection against infrared heat. Sitting there for a hour it took for them to put it out created a nice sunburn effect on us all. I don't think they will be doing that again any time soon. It was really hot. It's fortunate the tank did not BLEVE while they were fighting it.Dave_in_AZ Thanks this. -
Very true-I ran the Alcan quite a bit in the 70's, but only a few times since 2010 when I moved out to Montana-the blade hands really knew their stuff-I always thought that the section from 1202 to 1225 was kind of like their "playground"-they used to have the corners banked like a race track!
Steamboat is a real improvement over what it used to be back in the "good old days"!x1Heavy and ramblingman Thank this.
