Last I was told, a minimum of 1 thread must protrude past the nut. Bear in mind, this info was past on to me 9 years ago.

You will need to install longer wheel studs as there needs to be a minimum of three threads protruding from the wheel lug nut.Last edited: Dec 11, 2016

The the nuts have been taken off one or three at a time and ground off enough to show a few threads at some truck sales yards that have put alum. wheels on the outside and found this problem in the past rather than replacing all the lug studs?

I'm not doubting you, well actually, I am, but could you quote the regs? On old stud piloted wheels, there was practically no protrusion at all. Although they are no longer specced , there are plenty of trucks and trailers that still have them.
