My trainer and I drove team from day 2 and he was all about the money. The real learning started when that 6 weeks was over.
How much do trainers get paid?

This really frosts me! You spent 6 weeks with a driver who had more experience than you, and he didn't bother to teach you anything. How do they expect you to learn anything on your own if you weren't expected to learn with a more experienced driver?

My first day he drove from Dallas to Amarillo in the daytime then I drove in the dark in pouring down rain to Oklahoma to pick up a pork load. He wouldnt let me drive off the Interstates where you truly learn. I was nothing more than a money maker for him.

For some reason I cracked myself up today thinking about all the fun responses you'd get if you asked a room full of veteran drivers if they'd be interested in taking a newbie out for a month and how much money it would take.KillingTime and Lepton1 Thank this.

It's not the young guys I have trouble with. It's the 45+ guys who are on their second of third career that are the hardest to teach due to Grown ##* Man Syndrome. The young guys very quickly figure out the they know NOTHING and recognize they're in a whole new world and work to learn. The older "gentlemen" think wisdom is correlated to age and that 20-40 years driving a car accident free makes them a safe driver. These are the ones that I have harp on for mirror checks, GOAL, and following distance.
This is it.
I don't understand why CDL tests can be performed in anything smaller than a sleeper truck with a 53 foot trailer. I don't understand why the CDL test allows 25 "errors" and still pass. I don't understand why a CDL test back is into a space larger than 135 inches with more than 60 feet in front of the hole. I don't understand multiple guess tests; multiple guess checks for knowledge not synthesis of understanding.
And I certainly don't understand how someone can get a CDL and not pass Schneider's first week of orientation due to hard skills. If you passed your CDL testate two weeks ago you should still be able to pass it.
As long as a company gets $2,500- $10,000 for each new hire the company will continue to churn through new drivers. The government covers most of the orientation costs and the lower pay rate more than makes up the rest.Another Canadian driver, Brandonpdx and ethos Thank this. -
Bolded the parts that had me in tears
