I would like to ask a few questions about different carriers. I'll have about 10 years of experience when and if my family decides to move out of state in a couple of years. I'm looking to find a company that I can retire from.
I've spent most of my career in tankers and have done a linehaul schedule for some of that. When it comes time to move on, I'd be more interested in P&D as opposed to linehaul for family reasons. I've been there and done the overnight stuff.
I have looked at the information on this LTL subforum about most of the companies. I understand that pay will vary by area. I'm more interested in finding out about who offers free to low cost insurance and 401k info. I've spent as much as $1000 a month for the family's insurance which has driven me away from hauling gas to the company I'm with now. I do know that pensions are becoming a thing of the past but having a decent 401k plan offered would be helpful. Thanks everyone.

Your not gonna make that $90-100k that your accustomed to in LTL P&D, unless you work for UPS Freight as a dock/CDL combo driver. And even then you'll have to wait 4 years to reach top rate. From what I heard, ODFL pays about $27 an hour for P&D, but no OT til after 60 hours. I'd skip YRC or XPO, they seem to be on the decline. Fed Ex Freight starts you off around $23 and tops out around $26-27 an hour. Estes, R+L, NEMF I think is around $25-27, not 100% sure on them.
Linehaul is where you'll make the big bucks. But if you can stick it out for 4 years, UPSF is where you'll probably make the most in P&D.speedyk Thanks this. -
I appreciate that. I know that I'll never make what I do now but it should even out considering I'm looking at areas where what you earn and the cost of living are comparable.

Free health insurance would be YRC, Reddaway, Holland, ABF. I think UPSF makes you pay some of your insurance plus union dues.
Sysco and US Foods might be a good choice as well. I know drivers there work hard and get paid well with good benefits for fairly cheap. That would be probably the highest for local unless you went to UPS and started in a package car and worked up to a feeder position.
For p&d you won't be looking at getting rich as was already stated. There are a few good threads already going. I did line and p&d with reddaway and can say I didn't make much at all with p&d compared to running line and when I came home after work I didn't really do anything but eat, shower and sleep.

I fell into it by chance and left the tanker world. I avg about 50 hours a week working 5-6 days. Easy work, OT after 8/40, all voluntary. 401k + pension. Union, good benefits. Lots of cons too, but the good far outweighs bad.
Lots of choices here locally; ABF, OD, Holland/Yellow/Rdway, este, praxair, airgas, marathon, FedEx, plus food service, etc, etc, etc but no interest in persuing any of those unless I have to.Sho Nuff, Air Cooled, speedyk and 2 others Thank this. -

Ltl linehaul is where the pay is. It's easier than p&d and pays the best. Won't make 6 figures at ups in the city even with 20 years under the belt. Linehaul is possible. Our pay will be at .65 cents a mile. We have schedule linehaul runs at 650 miles a night with drop and hook pay extra. It's easy for those drivers to see 6 digits at Estes

Food service is another option. With McLane and sysco you can make more than P&D at most LTL barns with insurance fairly cheap. I think some Sysco barns even have a 4 day work week and a few guys on here work for Mclane they can tell you more. Around here Estes linehaul drivers are doing 1700+ a week, not sure about bennies. My dads friend isn't even at top rate yet and hes pulling 1700 every week

I know a couple ACME drivers who are making over $80k and working about 9-10 hours a day. Fully paid benefits, pension and severance pay. OT is paid after 8 or 40, and second extra days are paid double time. And it's all no touch freight either, store employees do all the work. Thank you for the replies! I'd be willing to continue to tackle nights if the pay is there although I would prefer days. I would take a cut in pay for that. But, like all of us, I still have to make what we need. I'd be more inclined to go with a grocery outfit over food service for the sake of benefits. I have never bumped a dock though-been pulling tanks my whole career but it's not like I don't know how to back a trailer.
