I have a 6NZ and the fan comes on for no apparent reason. Engine temp is good, coolant level also. Defrost and air conditioning off. Fan switch off. Outside temps are low. It does it intermittently. Sometimes it doesn't happen for a week, then it will do it for a day or a week. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason for it. Am I looking at a sending unit or solenoid problem? I had a mechanic look at it a while back and there were no over temp logs in the ECM or anything else obvious that he saw that was going on. Has me stumped. Thanks for any input.

What kind of wagon you got?

Find your fan clutch solenoid, usually on driver side firewall. With air tanks full, key on, engine off you should have 12v+key power on one wire and ground supplied by ECM on other wire. This opens your solenoid and allows air to go to fan clutch. Disruption of signals in either of these wires will cause the fan to stay on. On a Cat it is more than likely the wire from the ECM to the solenoid.
oicu812 Thanks this. -
Fixed mine tonight after chasing it for awhile.... Air intake sensor was reading 175 idling in the drive at 13°... Unplugged it and fan shut off. Changed sensor now reading 51°. Everything working correctly. Not saying this is your problem.. Could be alot of things....that's why they call it troubleshooting.

Where would the air intake sensor be on a 97 cummins m11..
