Driving to Alaska

I see you made it . I got here Thursday night and off loaded yesterday. I reloaded and doing my reset right now. If you are still in Anchorage let me know and I might venture out and meet up. Not sure what the roads are like since it was raining earlier.

 

I have a friend that carries drilling pipe to AK. He carries a sat. phone, high power ham and emergency becon.

 

I wonder if he got a load* out. hope so

 

You might wanna get moving. A willywah is off to your west about a hundred miles packing hurricane winds. It was warned earlier way out in the Dutch Harbor Islands today.

 

That would be the Aleutian Islands. Dutch Harbor is the actual harbor in the town of Unalaska. It is 850 miles from Anchorage. I know, I spent 7 years out there. Those winds will not make it to Anchorage. That speed is not a hurricane, out there it is Tuesday. A lot different than the ####### on the east coast. Highest wind gusts while I was there clocked at the dock at 176 mph and at the top of the mountain at 212 mph. We lost one roof, 6 windows and a steel warehouse on the entire island.

The Golden Seal is a movie filmed out there in 1983. A family lived at the other end of the island and raised sheep. Only way to get to them is by boat.

 

I live here and drive here. Good luck finding anything going south outside of summertime.

 

my dash heater quit but it does give off some heat if rolling. espar heater works alright yet it didnt do much good once the temps started to drop. sitting here idling in hopes the fuel doesnt gel with a bunk heater that took awhile to warm up. current temp - .09



the cold seeps in from anywhere it can , the floor is cold, have the curtains drawn around the windshield and the the curtains drawn behind the seats to hold the warm air in.

Wow! I did time there too. I was raised in a commercial fishing family. Later on I made the fuel run to Shemya and occasionally Attu-we worked out of the Captain's Bay side. On Umnak there are sheep and cattle too, at Nikolski and Chernofski as I recall.
You are spot on about the wind, though-had a few Maalox moments myself! Never cared much for the sea even though I was born into it, but it was a good way to support my trucking habit LOL!

 

I stayed on dry land. Worked for Universal Seafoods in the maintenance dept.
