Yes, tow trucks are subject to hours of service. The bigger companies have enough work to have shifts, so for them no big deal. The little guys not so much. They are exempt from hos when responding to a police ordered tow but this interrupts their 10 hour so they technically have to start the 10 all over again.
The big city guys usually don't go far enough away to do a log but in my lical area and when I was out in New Mexico tows of several hundred miles were everyday occurrences so even our light duty drivers completed daily log books.passingthru69 Thanks this. -
Friend of mine and I were headed south with border loads, a few years back. We passed three sets of these running convoy. I told him the big cash money we were making was going to dry up, because we couldn't compete with the Mexican 9-car we just passed.

You see them all over the country headed for Texas. Seen 4 cars once and the Oklahoma bear just looked at them. I have seen them running 2 full size school buses tied together.passingthru69 and Hammer166 Thank this.
