Fuuuuuuuuuuu,,,,,,!
I've dodged two bullets in the last week or so.
I was sent up to Vermont, way high, for a backhaul. I have a fairly regular delivery to Westport CT so I usually leave the house at 3am. So when I got to Vermont I was running out of hours. Not ideal but I really wanted to be back down in Massachusetts for the night. Maybe hit Yankee Candle's factory store,,,
But it was a slow load and I ended up spending the night in Vermont, free to go at 1am.
Yeah,,,,,
3 am over I-89? Whiteout conditions a dusting of snow over what was probably ice? One SUV stayed with me about a quarter of a mile behind and someone had gone ahead of me by about 3-5 miles because there were fresh tracks in the snow but I never got close enough to see any tail lights.
Then on Friday I had a load up to Albany NY. I went up through Scranton via Binghamton and as the saying goes, "once I hit 88 I saw some serious sh--!"
Made it back from both but that's two strikes for December. Company office party is on Thursday and I intend on drinking the boss's money away (lol)
So I'd better take it slow so I can get there!

Well that sucks royally. That 3 degrees means an awful lot.

There is no sure fire way to know if the road is froze up. I unloaded in Charlotte Friday night, came back up 485,they were spinning out on the inner loop, the outer loop was fine. One thing I do is crack the window and listen to the tires,if they get quite that's not good.

2 dead, 67 crashes, brought to you by
Capital One, whats in your wallet? -
And don't forget the temp probe is 3 or so feet above the road .... Cold air is heavier ... It could be 35F at your mirror and 32F at the road surface ....
Outside temp gauge is just one tool to use not the be all end all ...
The freezing rain is now in New England ....
Big Don Thanks this. -

Hate to be in it when it starts, I lay up for awhile, it's better when people start being aware conditions are bad, but starting too late gets you in with the less experienced who also waited for better.
It's cold here, the roads are worse right across the Mississippi in WI, where I was when it started.
You also have to remember that certain conditions allow water to stay liquid to well below 32f, as low as minus 40f, freezing fog is another unpleasant possibility, it's instantaneous, and defrosters aren't.
Low ambient black ice, due to refreezing with liquid on top of frozen, is very efficient at tripping up those incautious enough to be caught unawares.Last edited: Dec 18, 2016
