No offense and I guess it's all a matter of opinion, but, in all honest, isn't a work truck just a truck?? If we are talking about a show piece, than, I can't see putting it into service. More chances of it getting damaged from road debris and stupid drivers than anything else.

Volvo, Mac, Peterbilt, Kenworkth, Western Star, Freightliner, Scania, Man, whoever else. The are all work vehicles. Just like Ford, Dodge, GMC, Chevy. All work vehicles.

If what I am talking about doesn't get done, then why is there such a large aftermarket industry??
if what I'm talking about doesn't exist, then why does Iowa 80 exist, Chrome shop Mafia. These shops add aftermarket items to truck all the time. Sure, we are not talking about axles and suspensions and frames, but in the grand scheme of things it's still outside of the original spec of the truck..

Putting on a train horn is aftermarket. You don't go buy a whole new truck because you horn isn't as loud as you think it should be.

Your truck rides rough and you find out it's the suspension. You put new shocks on it to fix the problem. You don't go buy a new truck because of that.

You pull a load and you find out the truck isn't pulling quite as strongly as you want it to. Do you buy a new truck to fix this issue??? Heck no, you either turn the engine up and or you regear it.

Bully dog has power up kits for semi. Pittsburg Power would not have their own power muffler and power box, Engine HP/Torque upgrades if there wasn't a market for it. All aftermarket. These upgrades are not cheap to say the least. If installed incorrectly, or used unwisely, you could be talking about a total engine failure. That's around 40K+ for an engine swap. (depending if the block is damaged or head damage)

Other aftermarket items exist like Cryogenically freezing Gears to make them stronger, Adding coatings to make the gears slicker, coated bearings to give you more free HP/Torque, Better/higher quality tires to carry more loads.

I suppose I could go on and on to what people will do to what they have and i guess I just see that maybe doing this much work can be on the border of either doing the work vs buying a new truck. It just seems to me that from what I hear, because it's a Volvo, most people are against it. Now if I said I had a KW or a Pete or Western Star, most people would ask where I live and they would want to come over when the project starting to help. (Not that I am asking for help)

Just talking about a project that could or could no happen. As I said before, I just remember hearing
from some old school truck drivers who would not laugh at doing such a conversion.

Anyway. I'm gong to go buy a new truck.... :p Lol...
    Another Volvo :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:Lol....

    Just Kidding. LOl...

You've clearly convinced yourself it's worth doing a massive mechanical and structural upgrade to your Swedish Peterbilt, so rock on buddy!
You only need to justify it to yourself...
Perhaps with a firmer grip on power dynamics, laminar and dynamic airflow properties, thermal exchange efficiencies, and the related life span reductions caused by such you wouldn't...

    cnsper Thanks this.

Noooo. I just am looking for feedback for someone who has done the deed. I know there are people out there.

You have proven my point. Swedish Peterbilt.

If it was someone without a Volvo, you would have a conversation. Come on. Step outside the box. Lol...

    Hhhhhhhhhhh.

    Just trying to make conversation.

Look man, I don't know you from
    Adam.

You are just baiting the members here who have given you honest responses to your myriad of questions. If you don't like the answers, do whatever you want.

But please stop pushing until you get a nasty or angry response and that results in losing a valuable member of this section.

I don't care if you want to put 100k into a big wheel, you don't need our approval or input.

    Good luck

    Ron

Ok, let's play your little game then...
    Please answer the following questions.
1)What kind of gross weights do you plan to move?
2)What kind of trailer will you be pulling? (Platform or Lowboy)
3)What type of freight? (Mod's, buildings, oilfield, or equipment)
4)What will be the percentage breakdown of the following terrain you will be moving said weight over?
    a)Pavement
    b)Gravel road
    c)Off Road
d)Minesite mountainous terrain, with jeep dropped, chained up, and short neck? (Approx 80k pounds min on your drives)

    Your plan.
5)What size of dual frame are you planning to install?
6)What will be your wheelbase when complete?
7)What suspension and rating are you planning to use?
8 )What rear axle manufacturer and rating are you planning to use?
9)What rear axle ratio are you planning to install?
10)What, if any, aux tranny do you intend to run, and why?
11)What engine make, HP, & torque rating will be in said truck, and why that choice?

Answer these questions in detail, because your "baiting" doesn't show very much knowledge of what you are trying to accomplish. And I'm so far outside the box it's not even funny. I'm friends with one of the mechanics at our sister company that builds their Prime Movers, so I have access to unusual circumstance information.

Heavy Hammer - Oh no. Not this again........................... If you remember, I played that 1000 question game a long time ago. I answered the questions and still got no answer.
I was questioned by several people as to what I wanted to do, How to load specific equipment, etc, etc, etc. I answered the deeply probing questions and still got no answer from anyone regarding a topic I had at least 1 year ago. ( More questions than a job interview without any chance of getting the job. )

Tell you what. You are all right. I should not modify a truck. It's to expensive. It would is Frankenstein truck. It will take too long to do. And finally, why do this to a Swedish Peterbilt, it's a waste of money.

Rontonio 100K into a bigwheel, Really?? If you can throw out an amount, can you justify it?? Not trying to get you into a fight, but, you answered it with an amount and attitude. I didn't say anything about what you drive so be nice.

Listen, I'm not trying to push anyone into a situation that hasn't been done before. This is just a conversation that could be had or I guess not..

Heavy Hammer, I will at least give you this. I thanks you for at least being the only one (2nd time) who was willing to have a conversation other than it can't be done or the other things mentioned above or I'm going to do it my way anyway. As I mention above, I don't want to go through the 1000 questions without getting something in return Last time I got nothing.
You went through the time to at least ask probing questions, but, it feels like before. Nothing is going to come my way by answering them.

On the flip side of the coin, If you purchase a spec'd truck, aren't you doing it your way and you don't care what anyone says? Even if you get differing opinions, you have the final says so when it comes to putting you hard earned money down on the table to get what you want??

So, don't be mad at my decision (Which hasn't been made yet). I'm no different then you when it comes to the final say so. I just asked for some help to hear from more than a few on a possible project. What I got was an overwhelming amount of criticism because it's a Volvo.

Finally, was there a sincere statement as to why this could not be done. I don't mean generalities like it costs too much or you will Frankenstein your truck or it's a Volvo, why do it to that truck.

Anyway... I'm done with this topic for now.

you can critique what I drive and where I drive it if you want, I could
    care less. Clearly you do
not speak or understand sarcasm well. I need not be "nice" - I have paid my admittance to the game with my own money.

No one owes you any explaination or validation of your Ideas. You asked and received answers - whether you feel they are good, bad, or irrelevant.

Good look with what ever you build or buy.

Nope, don't care what you drive, or how you drive it. Just so long as it's good for you that's all that matters.
Seems we are all in the same game regarding paying our own money/admittance haven't we.

I don't know how to be more humble in sayng I don't expect to be owed any explanation or validation of my Ideas. Simply, put, I thought this was a topic some people who had experience in would want to talk about and yes, I have an interest in it. Nothing is wrong with that. Most people who start a topic have some skin in the game otherwise, no one would post questions regarding topics they want to talk about.

To the OP: There is some really good advice in this thread-when these guys talk-I listen!
I have done what you are contemplating, however not with Volvos ( for no particular reason).
    Consider this:
-I had a large, well equipped shop with some pretty smart guys helping
-I had a pretty deep bench so I could have a truck down for long periods
-I used to enjoy reconstructing trucks.
Some of the ones I did turned out pretty good-they were either construction/heavy haul or oilfield winch trucks and it was a fun thing to do, but I would be hard pressed to say that it made financial sense. The reality of the business is that a "good" truck is one that makes you money and a "bad" truck is one that doesn't-period. If you really like your truck and it is also a money maker then that is a bonus.
I would just say this-keep a sharp pencil and good luck to you .
I would not be the one to offer any technical advice-I have had some really goofy projects!

Please don't ask me about my Edsel powered International pickup LOL!

    Again-Good Luck

Thanks much for your response. Nice to hear. BTW - I won't ask you about your Edsel powered international pickup nor will I ask were can we see pics. Lol... Funny you should mention goofy projects, I met a new neighbor who has a Cummins Powered Early Model Ford Bronco (Not a Bronco II, but about the same size) Beautiful clean install. Lol..
