Im going into trucking as a newbie and was woundering how hometime works.I know some companys says every 7 days out,1 day off, something like that.So if I was out for 2 weeks, do I ask for hometime or do I have to request it. Can I ask more than 1 or 2 days off ? How do hometime works? Thanks

It does vary by company, but the standard is 1 day off for each 7 days. You have to put your request in, and your DM will try to get you home near the requested start date. Some companies and DM's are better about it than others. If you need a day or two extra to take care of something, it probably can be done, there again, it depends on the company. The more time you are home, the less miles you are getting.

Do your homework regardless of who you work for.

You speak of taking extra days. Check company policy. It used to be the policy of CFI to allow you to take those days. BUT..you owed the company those days back. IE if you took 2 extra days. You would have to stay out 4 weeks before you had 2 days to take off the next time.

While you do get 1 day for every 7 out. Most companies require that you be out 14, before asking to go home. Then they try to get you home within 7 days....maybe.

Don't be like the guy I met in Washington, who complained about not getting home in 3 months. I came to find out, after talking to him. He had never asked to go home. He had assumed they would automatically send him home once or twice a month. Lights on....nobody home.

He must have been asleep when they were told that you needed to request your hometime. You would have thought he would have asked his DM after a month of not getting home!

So are y'all saying if you end up somewhere you want to hang out for a couple of days(say Vegas, Calif., etc.) you could take your days off there. Do the dispatchers like that better so they can keep you close to a pick-up?

It will depend on your company. Some companies will allow you to take off anywhere you want. Others will require you to return to your home terminal, or designated "home".

Just ask the company before you agree to orientation. After you get to orientation...is too late.
