Interesting regarding the Hydrex. No issue with the oil in the heat. Good to know.
ATF - Adobe Type Font??? You put that in you system? (Joking) Considering how thin ATF is, I thought it would not become too thick when encountering cold weather. (colder than I'm thinking)
Without having leaks, and without the little that dribbles from disconnecting, I would imagine there isn't any fluid loss right?? (Maybe) -
ATF will work fine. These are very simple hyd systems, you can run just about any oil that meets the viscosity of the weather you are running in.
It's getting to where you can't hardly find straight hyd oil out on the road. Most parts stores will just have transmission/hyd oil, it will work for both so they just carry one kind. -
In your opinion, and I agree ATF is easier to find in a pinch, but, does ATF provide a pretty broad range of weather protection in the extremes of both hot and cold. So for example, in the winter, 10 degrees and in the summer 100 degrees?? Thanks.

I don't know the temp ranges of ATF. I do know a lot of hyd mobile equipment such as personnel lifts have ATF in them from the factory.
I tend to stay down south and stay out of the bitter cold. I've ran ATF in hyd systems without problems but I don't know how it acts when it gets really cold. -
Hydrex Extreme - Is this the product you are talking about?? From what I see, sounds like it has a great temp range. Looks like it's possibly Biodegradable as well. Looks like it's a Canadian product. Any Idea where to purchase?? Maybe in Edmonton, or Saskatoon??

An electric motor driving the pump would be a bit slower, but a lot less hassle. Very easy to run a power wire from your truck batteries back to run it.

Lots of great advice. Putting a few replies posted already all together...if you are really OCD then do both. Run a PTO wetline with wing style or flat face quick connect fittings and you will not get more then a few drops spilled when you disconnect them. You can drop and slightly pull forward a foot to disconnect from 5th wheel to grease and not have to disconnect hydraulic lines. Have HONDA motor setup with non-ethanol and hook pressure and return lines into each other, so you can crank motor monthly just to get some kind of run time and charge battery. When not in use cover it with moving blanket if in base of neck and if on top of neck build a cover for it. If running up North then use cold climate hydraulic oil.
If you are only going to pick one then take out a quarter and call it in the air. Heads PTO and tails motor. Just my opinion -
Honda is all I've ever had on hydraulic rgnsr and wouldn't change
Oxbow Thanks this.
