Just briefly reading your post, you mention, they pay "cargo insurance" what about your other required insurances?

Yeah, it' pretty awesome in a grItty industrial way. I usually avoid that route because of traffic, but sometimes I'll take it on a weekend morning just for the views if I'm hauling something towards Milwaukee. Nice to actually see Chicago itself instead of the usual Aurora, Joliet type of places.

I am responsible for truck and bobtail insurance, comes out to about $250 a month. I don't know if that's good or bad, but it seems reasonable. I have paid that much or more for car insurance when I was younger and had an iffy driving record.

Oh, there's also apparently a requirement for workers comp insurance, which is surprisingly annoying and kinda expensive, like $150 a month. Why do they even require that from non-employees?

    Why?

Because of the liability to them. There is a form of employment extension that they have to cover with contractors through most of the laws, so they enforce it. IT covers you and them, if you get hurt, it is another way of staying above water for a little bit while recovering, and a way to prevent the company from being sued.

I thought of that, I'm that way about cars - I always just buy an old junker for a couple of thousand instead of bothering with car loans and stuff. But I'm a little bit iffy about doing that with a truck, I just don't feel like I know enough about them to tell a decent one from a lemon. And I have gotten kinda spoiled by these smooth comfy new Cascadias I've been driving. They're like giant mellow Camrys. Old trucks, like the ones that I trained on in CDL class, too much like farm tractors.

Another thing about that is a lot of the fleet type companies, even Landstar, required newer trucks. So I'd have to also buy a trailer, so I can go independent. And that puts me quite a bit over budget.

@PermanentTourist I like that you're putting a lot of thought in to your decision, I'd recommend writing a list of questions and approaching Werner with them. If they're not answering those questions to your satisfaction, keep making your thousand bucks a week as a company driver. And then do something to repair your credit, save 50k or more, and explore your options at that time. Best of luck to you.
