There's not a thing wrong with experimenting craig, but it takes time. I was just trying to maybe save some headache. What works for someone else, may not work for you. RF is a funny creature...

Rf being a funny creature has been said to me before but as for experimenting, yes i have done a good bit but not knowing sweet eff all about ant theory is my down fall....Only good thing is that ill soon need a hair cut so i have not been pulling my hair out lately lol..
If i was smart i shoulda been keeping detailed notes BUT no one ever said i was a smart trucker lol

There are ways to measure losses in your system, k0bg's site lays them out iirc, it involves lots of math...
The best way to tell, would be performance. You can use a field strength meter to compare, if you have one.

Yeah i got one but im not flash..lol cant key up and measure at the same time lol...
Ill have to figure out a few stands and use my binoculars to see results when i key up..
I have that site saved so maybe i should go read more of it instead of dkimming..

Binoculars is the way to go, anything close to the meter (within a wavelength) will skew the readings anyway.
edit: any thing in the radiation field of the antenna (within a wavelength) will skew results also. Best to sit in the truck, with binoculars to take readings.

Same here but when we talk about colinear antennas, there has to be a gap, there also has to be a length involved between the element and the mount for each element. I tried the dipole thing a while back and got a good result of it but when the truck was moved off of the cement pad and onto the ground, it all changed. The FS readings i got were alright but then the move brought them down.

I also tried but didn't fully test the colinear antenna setup with just wires and it seems to have a better FS reading but as I said I didn't fully test it and it is still sitting there waiting for me to return.

I know you know this but it is worth repeating.

The dipole idea is a good one but it also depends on the ground below it to act as the reflector, as you know. the capacitance that is created between the elements and the ground also has an effect on how the signal is propagated from the elements. In the mobile application there is an additional factor involved, the ground is floating in a sense with the real ground being the earth. I tell these guys to work something out that has a tuned RF ground and it should provide a balance of sorts to the system while it helps reflect the signal to a point.
