Good suggestion, Sir. Your knowledge goes way beyond trucking.

Doing some rough math, you started at 18, been doing trucking for 26 years, want to go ten more. So I'm guessing you will be about 54 when you plan to pull the plug on trucking.

Are you looking to retire early?

If you have investments and some income from other investments (rentals) I would be skeptical about taking a large risk like a franchise situation.

It sounds to me like you have at least some of your retirement already set up, why go overboard and risk that?

If I were in your shoes, I'd get an associates in network security. Spend the next 8 years afterward to obtain some basic Comptia certs and making contacts. Than when you're ready to quit trucking you may be able to freelance.

    Just my 2 cents.

I have a BA in Psych. I have my Grad Certificate as a Mental Health Rehab Tech.
Trust me when I say: There's only so much of other peoples stupid bull-#### you can deal with.
If I ever go back to Social Work / Service I'm either desperate or there's a gun against my head.

I'll probably work full time until at least 62 or so, a lot of it will be predicated upon the kids' scholarship eligibility. I don't necessarily mind working, I've done it my whole life so it's all I know.

I won't be taking a big financial risk at all, franchising a restaurant is out of the question. I've thought about eventually selling my current rental properties and rolling that money in to a beachfront multiple unit building to live in/manage. Not sure if I want that risk/responsibility or not.

Your math is correct, I'm 44 now. The earliest I'll leave this industry would be 50-51, going to play the waiting game until then. 54 would be the worst case scenario.

Not sure where you reside; but here in Ohio, Flipping Houses is VERY lucrative. It's what I may do when I retire, and I got ten years on ya, bro!

Humm I have an associates degree, I'm always thinking in the back of my mind about what comes next. I think if I had to do something else I would want to work on fire equipment like fire extinguishers and suppression systems stuff like that.

If you go into real estate you won't like your colleagues very much. :^) And when I was licensed I wouldn't touch property management with a bargepole.

Since you have capital, start something small now. Find a copy of The 4-hour Workweek and think about what biz you want to start that will run itself and let you have freedom to do what you want.

Just about any self-employment is better than full employment. The myth that you'll definitely be alive and healthy to enjoy the retirement years may come true, but it may not. Lots of folks die after they retire because they have nothing else but work in their life, it's all they knew for decades.

    Start a trucking company. :D:D:D:D:eek:

I second that on the real-estate colleagues, I had a carpet cleaning business and have worked on buying a house, I have an idea of how real-estate people are.
