You know, what I think Talon Logistics (Giant Eagle) here in Ohio and Pittsburgh was hiring for drivers not that long ago, I think to a certain extent they would train there better warehouse workers, now I know though, there starting pay was like $16.00 an hour which is a tad low, although $16.00 an hour isn't awful pay for Class B drivers who are starting out or so and are lower on the totem poll, but that is a tad low for tractor trailer.

Haven't read the thread. UPS line haul non union? Cause it take a long time to become a UPS LTL local driver, a long time. Like 8 years working inside sorting packages.

Yes the Estes guys do good here too. Think they stay in motels, same with OD. Guy told me you will get zero, none OT with Saia. I don't really know their deal with line haul, haven't looked into the line haul gigs really since I'm the keeper of the Dad, just local stuff.

I loved pinballing around with my truck. And that's probably what I'll go back to, some day. I made excellent money.

Lot's of people like the same lane, I mean the exact same lane, I get bored with that lol.

$16 is what you start at as an on call casual with ABF, YRC, USF. Then if they hire you for real you go up to like $20 then up.
NewPenn pays line haul guys $0.60/ mile. That's about $30/hour.

He works for UPS Freight which isn't the same as UPS Package, however I think there kind of union at UPS Freight and the long term benefits and pay are still real good. UPS Freight bought out Overnite and also Pacific Northwest carrier Motor Cargo.

I applied to work the road at USF Holland a couple years ago, Holland is a high performance company and if you run your hours to the max every night and keep the wheels turning dispatch will give you the miles. I know Holland had a huge price reduction on freight and now has more freight then they know what to do with.

The package van guys do years sorting packages too. I mean the big trucks. They hire strictly from within, and its after years of sorting packages, for the union position. I know there is Buster Brown line haul that is non union. They have A LOT more of that east coast than out here.

Your right UPS does have tractor trailer guys that pick up the bulk stops, but that's a hard one to get. My neighbor is a package car driver for UPS he's been there since he was like 18 or something and he said they do have semi truck guys that go out into the city and pick up the big bulk stops, but those are just like you said the guys with super seniority.

Seems like everyone wants that. Even my local gig with my micro carrier. 132 hours last pay period ( 14 days ) lol. 2 days off. It's not hard. No OT though, all strait time. All truck load deliveries the line guys drop in yard, and I do truck load pick ups, and drop in yard for the line guys. Sometimes I get a 3 or 4 hour paid nap at some of these receivers, especially Budweiser, some days I have to really hit it, and get it.
115 hours this pay period, and that's with almost 4 days off lol.

I got accepted as a seasonal package van guy last year. What a try out!!
There were 100's of people there. The regular package van guys make $32. They were offering $16 to the temps to do the same job.
They send you to school, the whole nine, but they also repeat over & over, do not get your hopes up, you will not be hired.
So I thought F this. Why am I gonna work hard for half as much, do the exact same job, to get kicked to the curb in 3 months.

In Nashville it takes average 10 yrs. warehouse work before becoming a driver. There's 2 big warehouses and drivers only come from one of them. If warehouse workers in the other warehouse want to be drivers, they have to wait for an opening in the other warehouse, then transfer, then start the 10 yrs. wait over again. Union brothers shafting each other.
