I had similar problem. Took to a weld shop. He welded it with fuel in the tank. Fuel was up half tank, he filled with argon to prevent vapor from igniting.
Fuel level was below repair area.
    Good luck.

Had the tank off my '80 in about a half hour. Heat and air tools are handy ;)

JB Weld Steel stick might work for a temp fix.

Gorilla Tape, it's like duct tape's bigger, meaner older brother....

And if you didn't catch it already, sarcasm was liberally applied throughout that statement.

If its at the bottom like you said and not under the strap I'd say pull it off and get it welded professionally. If its above half way and under the strap i wouldn't be afraid to use an epoxy type repair on it. I have one like that. I redo the repair about every 4 years. Seems like it takes the diesel that long to attack it enough to leak. Before you pull the old one off lube everything up for a week or so. Goes a lot better with an impact gun and a set of torches lol. Have fun. btw if he straps the tank make sure it fits in the cradles nice when you put it back together.

It should, it adheres to everything that it is applied to. I think I used it on a leaky oil recovery tank which is aluminum. It is still on the equipment that I use.

I know a couple of people that have used a bar of soap and it worked for them. The one guy ran the truck with the soap "fix" for a couple of months, he just had to touch it up when the truck was washed and the soap came off.
