And did this driver work for the FMCSA? They probably heard it somewhere who heard from someone who thought they heard if from somebody...

Easiest way to do a search.. put in FMCSA and ELD's, get the word from FMCSA, not another driver whom you met in passing.

Who is exempt from the ELD rule?

Drivers who use the timecard exception are not required to keep records of duty status (RODS) or use ELDs. Additionally, the following drivers are not required to use ELDs; however, they are still bound by the RODS requirements in 49 CFR 395 and must prepare logs on paper, using an Automatic On-Board Recording Device (AOBRD), or with a logging software program when required:

    • Drivers who use paper RODS for not more than 8 days out of every 30-day period.
    • Drivers who conduct drive-away-tow-away operations, where the vehicle being driven is the commodity being delivered.
    • Drivers of vehicles manufactured before 2000.

    Last Updated : August 31, 2016

Carriers and Drivers who are subject to the rule must install and use ELDs by the appropriate deadline:

    • Carriers and drivers who are using paper logs or logging software must transition to ELDs no later than December 18, 2017.
    • Carriers and drivers who use AOBRDS prior to the compliance date must transition to ELDs no later than December 16, 2019.

What is and makes the Samsung Galaxy S-2 a "compliance tablet?" Nothing is required by FMCSA for personal electronic devices to be in "Compliance." It is the device that hooks to the ECM that must meet certain requirements. The Electronic Device that receives this information simply is BT'd to the ECM device and records the data via an App.

Basically its called "compliance tablet" all it really is just that a tablet that has the log sheets and other apps like daily inspection reports, IFTA and other apps to use. Not anything fancy but I got a good deal on it and as I stated I didn't want any of this information to be viewed on my personal tablets. It connects with blue-tooth to the Y connector that goes into my trucks ECM. Like I said some people will say it's stupid just use my phone or tablet but it's what suits me and maybe it will others.

Thanks for clarifying.. Since this is an open forum and ELD's are a "hot" topic, since you put "compliance tablet" I just wanted drivers to know that this is a "marketing" term and any electronic device that can connect to the ELD by Bluetooth can be used. FMCSA does not have requirements for any type of electronic device to be "compliant".

Basically it is a tablet with pre-loaded JJ K apps.

Yes exactly what it is. It is not regulated nor a mandatory requirement by DOT or FMCSA for any driver to have an additional device to be in accordance with the ELD mandate. It is merely personal choice. I do apologize for the confusion I do not want anyone here to start thinking they have to spend a ton of money to be compliant. There is enough confusing information out there no need to stir the pot any further.

On the 8 day out period. We hot shot for a dedicated company. Only drive 3 months in the fall and 3 months in the spring. We use our personal truck that we drive all year long. I take some of the trips and my husband takes the others. Is the 8 day per person or per vehicle?
What happens when we drop the trialer and they tell us it will be ready for pick up in 5 days and we spend the 5 days at the location and vacation?

You're off duty. You can do what you want. After 34 hours (5 days in your case), your log resets & your on a fresh restart.

This has always been the case. I ran for 7 years & didn't have to keep a logbook, just a time sheet.

So, would I be wrong to think the simplest solution would be to run a pre-99 model 1ton?

You could do that. But repair bills and underpowered egines, transmission, brakes etc..might not make it practical
