I'm not sure what the statement was so it would be hard for me to comment

I know, I know, I've been rather ... obtuse the last couple days in convening my thoughts.
OK here is an example to simplify the issue. It may be a personal observation by the way.
I've got this car and mounted an antenna on it top of the roof, drilling through the roof and using an MNO mount or what ever. There isn't really much to it, not crap.
BUT I can't really use it, the performance is poor no matter what I do. I can barely talk across the street.
I get mad, rip the roof off the car ... well anyway, I pull the antenna off the car and I pull out my trusty K-40/Wilson or super duper Lafayette magnet mount antenna and stick it on the car.
Now it works, I can talk for a few miles (Yes I know it doesn't sound like alot) and I got really great ears.
SO the question is this -
Why does a magnet mount sometime works better than an antenna mounted on the vehicle itself? -
I've never witnessed anything quite like that but if I did I'd end up throwing the roof mount in the trash
