So I bought a Cobra 29LTD Chrome edition. I want to get the most out of it. I've been attempting to do a little research about getting it tuned and was curious as to what they mess with inside the radio when being tuned. I also want to get a wilson antenna and noticed they come in different power ranges, 1000w, 1500w, so on and so forth. Is it possible to have to strong of an antenna? A good buddy of mine suggested a wilson 2000.

Yes on the Wilson 2000, but just one. I currently run a Cobra 29 from 1998. Dad gave it to me when I started driving. It has been tuned twice. Right now it has a Connex echo board, talkback, red Nitro knobs, red/blue RX/TX light, and red meter light, all LED. It does it's job, and has been in every truck since '98. The most recent tune was from RoadStar Communications in Ohio...in the BuckEye. He is on Facebook, YouTube. Great work...I am very pleased. This recent work was done almost 4 years ago.

The power rating on the antenna (in watts) means that that particular antenna can safely handle that much power from the radio (or amplifier). Some of these claims are quite exaggerated, but unless you're running a huge amplifier, these measurements are useless in choosing an effective antenna. For your particular set up, any antenna would do. A wilson 1000 is my suggestion, but there are many other great options.

You don't really need a fancy antenna to talk very far.
I think your best bet is to leave the Radio stock and don't let anybody tamper with any adjustments inside the radio and get yourself a Francis antenna for $10 and call it good

Francis does make a fine antenna, but I've never seen one for $10. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places?

You'll get out further with a lower powered radio and a good antenna set up with good SWR, more than you would with a high powered radio with a no good antenna set up.

Like BTShepp said, unless you're planning on pushing high power, there's no need in buying a antenna capable of high wattage if you're not really gonna put some fire to it.

I currently run a 5' firestik (can handle up to 1,000 watts) on my mobile unit. SWR of around 1.1 on channel one and 1.3-1.4 on channel forty. They're fairly cheap ($20-$30) and they're top loaded antennas. The tunable tip is handy for lowering SWR's and Firestik is made in the USA!:headbang:

Buy a noise canceling mic, astic or roadking, external speaker (help rec clarity, the 6 foot francis is as good as low cost antennas get fancy light changing colors do not make it talk, enjoy your radio... . make sure the install is correctly done.

I also recommend the Astatic 636 noise-cancelling mic as well as the Rangel SRA noise-cancelling mic. I have not personally tried the RoadKing, but I am always finding unanimous reviews from radio operators criticizing the new models for being cheap and inevitably breaking. And they seem to cost the most $ of all three mics. They must be living of the old reputation of their former quality mics.

Whatever you do make sure you don't send your radio to Forrest Gump otherwise he might do this to your radio.
