If it was me I'd stay away from a 08 they had quite a few issues. I'm a peterbilt and kenworth guy. But the 2012 with paccar mx engine I've heard good and bad about that engine I have talked to some guys that were really happy with the mx and some that aren't. One big setback is mx engine needs to go to paccar dealer for major work where cummins or Detroit has a lot more options of service centers. Personally I have 14 Pete with isx and I like it. I personally have no experience with mx engine. 08 is when dpf first came out and I've heard some horror stories on 08-10 year trucks.

Really best advice is to pick the one you like the most tell the dealer you want to take it to your mechanic and have him go over it. Spend the $ to have a private mechanic not one from dealership thoroughly look the truck over for you. Used trucks are always a gamble. It's always good to get a 2nd set of eyes on them.

Nope I've never drove a automatic. What type of freight do you plan on hauling and what part of the country?

I agree the 386 is a nice looking truck. I don't know anything about freightliner other then years ago I made a couple trips in one a Columbia I believe. I went from 07 cummins to this 14 cummins and before that had a cat I just would be cautious about some of those fir
