I could not sleep at night due to a cough that kept me awake or allowed only short naps in between coughing fits. A Doctor prescribed Promethazine-Codeine Syrup. I last took it at 4:30 AM and my current plan is to not take it again. How many hours need to pass before I can drive again?

I presume I will need a DOT physician to clear me to drive.

Only a schedule I substance will medically disqualify a CMV driver. To be safe, check with the prescribing physician to be sure you can drive safely while taking the medication.

Why would a physician have to clear you? If no-one knows except you (and now us) wait until you're comfortable that you aren't experiencing any side effects and go your merry way.

We had a driver fired for not disclosing that he went on the needle for diabetes. He received the required waiver but it was after he returned to driving. I don't want to make that kind of mistake.

If it's for the cough and you have a prescription you should have no worries

I last took the medication 11 hours ago and I know that if I took a drug screen this very minute, that I would fail. I would like to know if I need 24 hours, 36......96. I just want nothing to do with flunking a drug screen.

    1. You are good to drive as soon as you are no longer under the influence of the drug.

    2. You don't need to be "cleared" by a "Dot physician."

    3. There is no need to disclose this to your employer or anyone else.

You're not going to fail a drug screen. If you get a random, you have a prescription. Even if you initially test positive, so long as you get a copy of the prescription to the MRO when he calls, it will be reported to your employer as Negative.
