    Hello!
I'm wanting to hear from drivers on WHAT MAKES A GOOD COMPANY TO DRIVE FOR?

What advice would you give to someone starting a trucking company regarding the way that drivers are treated?
All other things being equal, what would make a company stand out from the other options?

Thank you for taking the time to reply!

If you are looking to start your own business, I'm not the right person to give advice. But, from an employee's standpoint, it all depends on what exactly the individual driver is looking for. For me, personally, it's always been about balance. From miles and money to home time and quality of life outside the truck. A major part of the reason I have stayed with my current employer for the past 11 and a half years. That's my perspective; others may vary.

I think it is all about driver pay and driver comfort. No one wants to work for cheap. Pay people well and they never leave, look at the post office or govt jobs. Pay them badly and they are always looking for the next job that pays more.

Driver comfort means forking over the ten grand or so for an APU, or not complaining about having a high idle percentage.

I second the APU. Diesel APU in the trucks.

If you want to start a trucking company, then ask that question after you become a driver and work for someone else.

Be a driver first. Spend years learning about the industry.

It will probably scare you off from starting your own trucking company. Ive seen that companies will burn your first million dollars and then bill you the second million really fast. Your line of credit will burn up first. Your drivers will have a habit of getting into really expensive problems if they are really bad.

Trucking is a very hard way to make a dollar. You will find loads not being paid until 120 days have passed these days. If not more.

It's nice to have ambition and dreams, go for it. But learn first as a humble driver. You cannot be a Captian telling many drivers what to do unless you have spent a time doing it yourself.
