Hello guys well as the title says I was in fact pulled in to the southbound scale house on 85 in Charlotte for an inspection. Been getting used to it since us small carriers are easy targets to meet the quota for the day. Anyway the Trooper came up asked for the creds and asked me where I was coming from. I told him Charlotte and heading to Gastonia for another pick-up and then off to Knoxville TN. He then says well hell your not inspectable. HUH? What does that mean. He begins to tell me that if I am starting my day in the state of NC and making pick-ups in the same state I am not eligible to be inspected according to their protocol. I have never heard of this and asked well I have been inspected before at scale houses in NC with pick-ups in NC leaving the state.

He told me basically I was being signaled out because as I said hot shot carriers running two and three car haulers are way easier that full size class 8 trucks. He said the Troopers that are inspecting you are just getting their quota and in some cases he has known reports to be tossed out because their policy doesn't permit that. This Trooper was also really cool about telling me that even though my GVWR on my trailer and truck total 24 K I am rated on registration for 26 K so if I was pulling a load with 25 or 26 K and my tires aren't blown out or bent and I am doing so safely I wouldn't be given a ticket. Then there was some other stuff that really wasn't to relevant. But I did also find out even though I have CSVA stickers from 2016 they are considered good for 3 months even into the new year depending on the quater. Now I know there are a lot of you old head professional encyclopedia guys here that all know this but I figured I would share it with some of us that may not be as smart as ya'll. Just felt like giving a little info back to the guys that have been a huge help on here for me.

Have a great day, travel safe and God Bless

That guy is pretty cool already know who you are speaking of when I started out in flatbed he gave me tips in 2010 about properly securing loads and what inspection officers are looking for when you cross the scales. Had a 20 mintue convo with the guy, great attitude and wasn't hard up for writing citations..one of the best officers I actually ever dealt with in my 43 years of life

Totally agree guy was extremely helpful and even pulled in another hot shot hauler to show me what he was talking about with the IRP cab card since I don't have one and according to the IRP office in NC do not qualify for one. I only brought that up to him because I wanted to sign up for prepass but they informed me I need an IRP number which I don't have and apparently cant get

IRP begins for over 26,000# traveling interstate or three or more axels on the power unit.
The point about your licensing be over your GVWR of truck and trailer is one I have made on here many times and caught a lot of flac over.
The dot only seems to care about what registered weight is.
That's why you see pick up trucks licensed at gvws of 36,000 or more.
Most of the time these gvws are over what any pick up truck manufacturer state they should be.

Exactly what the Trooper told me. My truck and trailer max out at 24,000 but since my truck Reg is for 26,000 he states that I could haul up to 26,000 pounds legally as long as my truck and trailer can be safely traveled on the road and I would not receive an overweight ticket. However my equipment costs way to much money to exceed the manufacturer suggested weight so I wont let that happen. Call me a wimp or whatever but I would rather be a safe wimp continuing down the road while these "tough haulers" are broke down on the side with a blown tire or other major problems. That's just me though, and I hope it never happens to anyone but man I gotta tell you I see 3500 dually's running with Mini 4 and Mini 5 trailers with two sometimes three large SUV's or trucks and the back end of their truck is squatting so low I don't know how they maintain steering control. But DOT lets them go right on by. Go figure

The problem I have with it is dot pounds in to our heads that there regulations are all about safety.
That's why they say we need elogs and speed limiters for safety.
But you can roll down the road in a pick up well above the gvw that the manufacturing engineer says is safe for the vehicle and dot has no problem with it.

I see it all the time and in a prior post I made mention of this. The guys who run cars for Copart and IAA and those buy here dealers running these trucks that look like they came out of Copart themselves pulling a U-Haul style trailer down the road no flashers no tow lights sometimes parts on cars missing. Just the other day I watched a guy in a Ford Explorer towing a Toyota Land Cruiser down 85 the explorer had no front bumper windshield was cracked all the way across and he has the Toyota on a dolly. It amazes me that they can get away with this and we get pegged for not using four straps on a car or a marker light out. As for speed limiters. WORST idea DOT has ever come up with. I forsee more traffic congestion and accidents because of it.
