After alot of interviews Ive decided to go with melton. Mostly due to what they are starting me out at, and home time. Im tired of being out months at a time. Start orientation with Melton on 1/23, any helpful advice or tips? Flatbed is a big change for me, been a bed bugger for 15 years, last 7 of those OTR. Being a bed bugger, Im definitely no stranger to hard work. This is a different ball game though, climbing on top of the loads and stuff. Only time I every came close to that is tarping a wooden crate, and putting it on my tailgate. Any advice would be appreciated.

Its based off verified experience. They offered me .49 cpm/ $40 tarp. But keep in mind I got 7 years OTR, and a few years local experience. Most of those as an O/O doing HHG. Thats a lot more than a few other places offered. For example: Keim TS offered me 40cpm and was bragging about how guys were getting 2000 miles a week. I was kinda insulted. Seemed like good people though. A few others were in the 46-48cpm range, but tarp pay was less, and average miles were way less.

Yes, FB will be different but more involved with load and have found 48' spread axles easier to maneuver. Best advise is really pay attention during securement training as you will use all of once on your own and trainer may or may not do it right. Hope fully they will send you out with a trainer. Have a student mind set not a experienced driver ego, at least at first.
A good pair of steel toed boots is essential not a pair that will fall apart on you and let water in. The small details are important and lace ups just are to time intensive. My Doc Martin.s slip on have done great, plus the padding on both sides of ankle have kept me from injury several times. Still working after 1year. Also backing the spread axles takes some getting used to so practice as much as you can.

I know spread axles very well. I pulled one for a couple of years. They actually arent sending me out with a trainer. Was told securment training on the yard, then go into my own truck. They said they give a securment guide for each type of load, and if I have any questions about how something should be done to take a pic and call safety. Reminds me of when I got into HHG, trailer full, then Im figuring out how to hang a 3,000lb crate off my back doors using only straps, because my trailer didn't have a pullout tailgate.I was scared of it falling off the first time and used every strap I had available. I see me doing the same thing here the first few months. Will probably get laughed at, but atleast I know its not going to fall off going down the road.
