The NW on my 25 is basically gone. My 29 is still bright like yours. Are they doomed to fail, or was my 25 an exception? The 25 is from 1999, the 29 from 2012.

Is the Delta tune used to like clear up the frequency ?
-
It's used to adjust the RX frequency slightly. (TX adjustment is against FCC requirements.) Since it is not a sideband-capable radio, it is a useless function, as the frequency is just fine with the delta tune knob centered, or "off." I bet they put the knob there to expedite after market mods like echo or variable TX power.Diesel Dave Thanks this.

When I had my Cobra 29GTL, I never had any use for that knob.
-
Cobra over volts the faceplate, it's 180v I believe, so they don't last. Galaxy did at first, too, but corrected it after a few years, theirs are 140v now.
I'm going to put mine on a switch so I can kill it during the day. -
Does it help to keep the dimmer lower?
-
So I've been told.

I like the look of the cobra nightwatch, but it was a poor design. Its almost rare anymore to see one that still works. The lights were nothing more than a translucent tape, on the back of the face plate. It required AC voltage to work, that is what the little module bolted to the chassis, next to the channel selector is for.
The tape usually fails first, the only way to fix it, is to find a working face plate, and change the whole thing. The tape itself cannot be replaced. If the module fails, and you are able to source a new one, it will cost almost as much as a new radio, and they're a pita to change. Ive changed a couple, pulled the module from a parts radio, and placed in another...Only to have half the lights working when finished, lol the tape was bad as well.. Its not worth the effort imo
The uniden lt's, and elite radios however, just used a simple l.e.d board behind the faceplate. Most all of them that I have seen, are still working. A Much more practical design by far.rabbiporkchop Thanks this. -
I think the Unidens are better looking radios anyway. Knobs feel better and it just looks good. Basically same performance as it's Cobra brother, but I'd choose a Uniden if I had the choice.
Not as easy to find them these days though. Cobra is everywhere.Bout Z Thanks this. -
The PC78 Elite had been my dream radio since I first saw one when I was 14. At the time, I had a 23 channel Dynascan 29.
