Well I am driving a tractor trailer now, yesterday did a drop and hook, hooked up to the trailer I was picking up, did a tug test just fine, got underneath and looked at jaws and kingpin, and I guess I didn't look hard enough. Pulled out, something just didn't seem right as soon as I turned, I was going slow, and could feel the trailer like it was just loose, something not right. As I'm turning I look in the mirror at the trailer and see the driver side trailer tandem lift up off the ground as I'm pulling out and turning left. Slammed on the brakes, wheels go back on the ground. Crapped myself. Go look at trailer and fifth wheel and it wasn't connected, trailer was just sitting on top of the fifth wheel plate, more driving like that and it would have slipped off and I'm guessing that would have been the end of my job...
Loose Leaf and QuietStorm Thank this. -
Pop the storage box under the sleeper & there's like 6 gallons of water / coolant in there.
I'm going whoa. This thing must use a lot of coolant.
Start pre trip on engine. I notice the cap is gone from coolant reservoir.
Then I notice reservoir cap laying on inner fender.
AH HA says I.
Drove it for a week, in Phoenix & Texas in June, never used a drop. -
street beater, QuietStorm, Blackshack46 and 1 other person Thank this.

Pretrip the truck. Then check your pretrip.
Loose Leaf Thanks this. -
29 years of tractor trailer, I've forgotten to do just about everything at one time or another. Slow speed brake with spike only will show whether or not your fifth wheel is properly locked. However the three visuals should tell you everything. Adjustment fork nut is seated, no air space between fifth wheel and kingpin plate and the jaw check. The jaws will always close if the engage the kingpin properly, but if the adjuster nut is not seated they are not locked.
Pre-trips are complicated, that's why you Pre-trip your unit every day. Walk around inspections 1 hour after start and every three hours on long trips. -
Mine was lol -
